I've just recently decided to order a Dobari Style shinai, just to try it out. I put the thing together with a leather kit I already have, and I noticed that the tsuba comes up about an inch and a half short due to the thickness of the shinai in that area. Is this normal, if not.. is there a way to fix the problem? It feels weird having a shorter handle to hold onto.

it's possible to be thicker for the standard tsuba to be fitted properly...

how to fix it??.... File it... make the hole bigger....

At any hardware store you can buy a wood rasp with a round profile, they work great for filing out the insides of tsuba. You'll probably need another tsuba because after it's filed to fit the dobari it will be loose on your other shinai.
