View Full Version : How Do I Get an Avatar?
hamish
17th August 2003, 05:31 PM
To get an avatar, first you must have more than 60 posts to your name, then you need to upload your graphics file, which must be 50 X 50 maximum in gif format. Note that the user permissions for this are only updated once per day, so wait at least one day after achieving 60. Note that this post has been updated to reflect reality: ignore any guesses in succeeding posts.
Hamish
PS Please also note that low/no-content messages posted for the sole purpose of getting an avatar will be deleted. Please participate in the forum normally, you will get there soon enough.

Hi Stanford,
What do you see when you go to 'Avatar' under your userCP panel?

Avatars are small graphics that are displayed under your username whenever you post.

This is what is presented there is no option to change or add a avatar. If you press submit modification or reset fields nothing happens.

I had a look in the control panel, but it should be OK. There is no option below that for custom avatars? There should be a check box to enable it.
If its still no go, mail me your avatar and I'll do it from here.

I'm having the same problem as highelf.
What address should I send the avatar to...also is it 50 x 50 (pixels?) and does it have to be a gif?
Thanks

Just send Sminki $100 and he will give you the secret password to get an avatar. In addition, he will explain why the password is the same in Japanese and Korean and provide an authoritative history of password selection.

I could add a Final Fantasy avatar no problem, and I've been able to upload custom avatars, so all I can think is that it may have something to do with your browser setup.

Hi folks,
I think you're right - the avatar functions seems to be behaving sporadically lately, ever since they upgraded the vBulletin forum script.
When I joined the forum back in 2002, I had to make 50 posts, and then the avatar option appeared. Now, aside from those FF avatars, the custom option disappeared again!

Is there a size limit to the custom avatars? My post count is far from enough to be able to upload it, but I got carried away and made a 20 KB animated avatar.
I hope it's small enough...
By the way the avatar I made can be seen here if anyone's curious:

thanks<rei>.gif, .jpg, etc. are Windows file extentions for graphic files. Just like "zaphiel.doc" would be a Word for Windows document, "zaphiel.jpg" would be a graphic file, e.g. a picture.
First download the picture from the net to your harddisk. When creating an avatar from a larger pic, use a graphics program like Photoshop or PaintShopPro to dick with the pic (make it 60x60 pixels, adjust color, etc.) then "save as" a gif or jpg. If you're using a Mac, you may need to manually add the file extention to the file name. Then you're all set to upload this from your harddisk via your Kendo World user cp as a new avatar.
Good luck!

It's a misunderstanding.
You can have an avatar from even before you do your first post. But you have to choose from one from a prebuilt set. When you reach X posts you can upload and use your very own avatar.

well you're only saying that because you have 14! jk but maybe they should set the number to 570 and you can only get one if your name has dominic or paganelli in it. that way, it would be so hopeless to get an avatar, noone would even bother to spam.
seriously though, everyone wants thier own special avatar. so i think 200 is a good number. very difficult to spam enough. after all, you can't spam your way to heaven.

Having said that, 64 posts in the 11 hours since you've joined is quite a lot, even if you are generally trying to be relevant. Second, my comment about stupidity was more aimed at the stupidity of placing such a high premium on avatars. Why do people care so much?

I always thought the point of this forum was to talk about Kendo and ask questions and help each other out and stuff. I didn't know that 5625 (look at me, I can do math in my head, lol) pixels have such priority for some. I guess if you would like to share your artwork, there's always deviantart.com. :)
I think as someone who follows bushido one should know that one needs to "earn" the ranks/title. You would not wanna spam your sensei with men cuts just so you could be a shodan by next week, right? :)
And if you compare 5625 pixels to other things in life, yes, it does seem stupid that doesn't mean whatever picture you had in mind is stupid.

Soldier Blue, I agree with you. Go forth and post as much crap as you can in a short frame of time to earn a badge. In fact, f*ck it, lets change the dan-i grade system to number of suburi done, no matter how poor the quality... If I join a kendojo today and do 100,000 suburi, can I have a black belt? After all, that is what most poeple do in the years it normally takes to achieve shodan. Why don't we just rush through the techniques and avoid the years in the dojo?

I agree with the member for 3 months (or more) thing for privileges. That's a good idea and I'm on other forums where this policy is common because post count does lure some people into posting frenzies. (I don't mean anyone in particular, this is an observation from a lot of internet communities).
I think it's the same as when newbies train in regular sweats instead of kendogi and hakama. Or in karate for example you have your white belt first, and then once you keep training and you progress you earn privilidges, such as a different belt colour. Also, once you are a black belt you can have individual kanji sewn onto your black belt, but you could never have that done on your blue belt for example. Same goes for kanji or logos on the back of our gi. I dunno, but I guess it's a similar mentality in a way as it is here with avatars or titles.
The basics come first, only later when you're solid in those can you be more of an individual. (Sorry if this is all to philosophical but that's what I learn at my Shotokan Dojo :P )

What is the logic behind having a post count requirement for avatars?
All the requirement achieves is post padding and flames that spoil otherwise interesting theads.
I only wrote "I'll be post padding" because I knew I'd be consecutive posting and that it would look like post padding. Getting an avatar wasn't really my intention. Ironically my "caring about an avatar" was only a problem because some people care too much about avatars.
Note to the administrators - The sensible thing to do would be to abolish the count requirement.
While I'm at it, the rep tool kind of fun but I don't think it does much for the level of discussion.

The post count suggests some seniority to noobs, whereas in fact it just shows who has time to waste.
The reputation feature is good fun, but ultimately pointless. I get shedloads of rep for joking around or telling fools off and none for pearls of wisdom - due to the fact I post no pearls of wisdom.

Brilliant.
If only I'd have known you were so desperate, Ashura. I would have given you some of my crap posts for free. I have plenty to share.

Which member? The forum software disallows animated avatars.
Will I get them into trouble if I name and shame. I know of two off the top of my head, one animated avatar we will all recognise [but I forget the username, oops] and I just found the member I was thinking of. Obviously I don't want to lose them their avatar, they're pretty.

Hamish would be one of the guys that owns this joint. He's not just any member.

Tell-tale! ;)One could even use "nark".

Hmmm, in the UK 'nark' means something else than the US version (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=nark). If I am narked, it means I am a bit pissed off about something.

Mystery solved - it's one of the stock final fantasy avatars. The system won't let you upload a custom animated gif.

Being digitally and computerly callenged and as it's hot sticky O-bon time, could someone send you a cooling, tanden-chuckling pic they took and the great Hamish turns it into an avatar with a wave of his tanto?

You can use almost any image tool to do that, including paint.

Image tool, sounds like a spanner/wrench. OK now mine's ready (had a little help) so how to get it here?

Click your heels together three times, repeating there's no place like home each time...
...and then click here (http://www.kendo-world.com/forum/profile.php?do=editavatar).

What makes it worse is seeing 100's of people using your Avatar but I can't use it myself until I make enough posts to use it myself.

I think he means this (http://nakaleen.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/kendo_what_tha.jpg). Although, I'd say its more like 2-3 people who use(d) this as an avatar.

You need like 5 posts.... says you've been a member since 2005. I don't think anyone can accuse you of spamming the forum. :)

I just wish I hadn't spent all this time lurking instead of adding my virtual two cents for 60 topics or more!
Maybe there should be asterisk or note in the 'Edit Settings' section to let people know when they sign up so they don't spend 30 min trying every browser on their machine, cleaning caches and trying again. People only search the board to find out what to do after they've tried and failed to do it themselves.

We learn patience in our dojo, not here. This is only a forum, not a school.
Please, ad a note in the setting section. There is no reason to let folks lose there time.

One could say we should purport ourselves in life as in the dojo?
Perhaps next time you visit somewhere new, you could start by greeting rather than dictating?
