Heres my final match in the Mudansha individuals,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9FrBMjIsf8
I had 8 matches that day, and I could only manage to find 4 of them, an donly upload one(the others are way over 100 megs). Which kinda sucks, because some of the other matches were realy exciting. Maybe next time. But heres a small taste ;) .
Comments welcome.

the do was awesome man.
i just noticed one thing which was done twice: the other guy was backing up comfortably with his shinai to the side and you were waiting for him to get ready again?
what i meant was, he gave you 2 openings there.

Thanks!
Hes my kohai and it was a friendlier match compared to my others. If it was someone else, I might have tried to take the opening, but I would rather get ippon in a more beautiful way. Also, we nodded out of tsuba zeria each time, so I dont think it would have been right for me to nod out, than try and take advantage.

Sorry Gary, I just looked through the whole DVD I got from my Dojang, and I couldn't find you in any of the matches that were recored.
Next time we go to a tournament, ill bring a camera and see if I can record one of you matches.

I agree it was very impressing, looks like a yudansha fight, not mudansha. If you want constructive critisism, I have two points. First one is explained by what you said about the aite being your kohai: sometimes you seem to be too cool/self-confident/easy-going or even arrogant. You control the other guy and therefore donīt seem to give your best in every moment. I can understand that because you really were in control but in shiai this can be crucial, as I see it.
Second, I personally didnīt like the do that much. Of course it was fast and you hit correctly and I really appreciate people doing do in shiai because it easily gets forgotten. But given the skills you showed in the film, the do could have been more powerfull, sharper with even more zanshin. Do is very hard to score, so in my opinion the aspects like zanshin have to be even stronger than usually (just like hiki-techniques). Therefore I really dislike taking one hand off the tsuka afterwards, too. But thatīs just MHO and only to give you some point of ciritisism since you gave such a good perfomance and won your taikai so superiorly.

Thanks so much for the comments!
I agree with you on both points. I also looked at the do, and besides the actuall strike, everything could have been done better. The footwork wasn't to great, and I thought I could have put my body into it much more, with better zanshin as well. Ill be working on that as soon as I get back to practice.
As for the "calmness" thing, there was definitly too much of it in the match you saw. But I think it was overdone during the whole shiai as well, because I was realy trying to just "relax" and let things happen. I have been having a type of "block" recently in shiai, and I kept losing in the final/semifinal rounds, and I realy thought it had to do with my mental state. So I was trying something different. So next time, I know what to do and what not to do. Maybe be a little more agressive or something.
Also, I think I just passed my 1st dan exam, so hopefully, next tournament will be tougher for me.

Congratulations on the win and the shodan! I cant imagine that tournaments will get much harder until you hit 3-4dan or so. Anyway, stick at it!!!

The Masters at my dojang, when they are serving as judges, do not believe that it is appropriate to be renduring coaching advice during a competition. Nevertheless, as I approached my last bout (approximately the same time as Ahmed) in the finals, I was told, "the judges are getting tired, it's late, if it's close to a point - expect it to be given, be more aggressive".
You got the call. Be proud. Next time it may go the other way.

My kohai is 3rd kyu I think. He still has a while before he gets shodan. Most of my matches before him, were a lot tougher, and againsts Ikkyus like myself. It was cool though, because my Dojang won all the medals in the mudansha individual tournament. We got second place in the Mudansha team tournament.

"the judges are getting tired, it's late, if it's close to a point - expect it to be given, be more aggressive".
This is a great quote because it happens a lot. Points are given easier as the sun sets, enchos drag on, and in synch with the level of competitors. Being able to "give" points in the last 2 situations (the 1st being tiredness/laziness depending) is one of the signs of an experienced and good shinpan, in my opinion.
Hehe, I am still a chunnin then. :ninja:

Good fight!
Like some of the others here has said, perhaps a little too much waiting, but rather that than the usual mudansha fights with "ai-kakari-geiko".
Lots of nice pressuring, but you only took advantage of that once.
Though admittingly, you did score then.
The only thing that bugs me is why you insist in writing "the" as "teh"?

Hahahah. Oh my, this has been a bad habit of mine ever since I started typing. It realy isn't done on purpose, its just a typographical error that I make allmost ever single time. Sorry :nervous: . Im going to try harder to fix this. Thanks for commenting on that.
And thanks for the comments on the fight as well.
A lot of people commented on the waiting, but, I can't stand attacking without getting an opening first or getting a point. I try to only attack when I am sure of the opening. And I did try a few times to make him try for my men, but I think that was only once or twice. Im definitly going to work on putting more pressure on my oppenent, I tend to be a little too subtle with it. Especially against weaker opponents, if you see me against stronger opponents, you will notice the pressure a lot more, and not much waiting at all.
Kakari geiko during shiai just isn't my style, and realy has never been, except for maybe my first few months in bogu.

I definately agree: i feel the matches are more fun when they are more tactical. I know i don't have the endurance for kakari geiko style of jigeiko. I could also see and feel the seme that you put on your aite--it was really strong. i think he should have attacked more instead of waiting, inorder to gain control.

I feel the same way. But I understand how many people would say that I should attack more at my level.
If it ever comes to that, Ill give it a try, but I feel much weaker and vulnerable when I attack a lot.
Robobob
26th April 2007, 06:34 PM
Iīm not sure you should attack more. But there were moments where you just blocked your aites strikes, where looked almost bored. These are moments where I think an oji-waza or at least a disctinct application of seme would be appropriate. I know exactly how you felt in these moments since I act similar often enough. But to gain a sincere attitude toward shiai or kendo in general we should get rid of this...

8th May 2007, 02:45 AM
yea... thought that doh was a little close i thought and you go sideways too much, you went almost perpendicular to your opponent, which means you were striking too close and you didn't have your momentum going forward.
Some other constructive criticism... you lean forward too much which resulted in the two other things i noticed:
1) your footwork seems heavy
2) I think you simply blocked once or twice, which basically means u weren't ready. It happens to everyone, but I think you can probably respond better if your kamae was straighter. That's from my own experiences. It may seem like a good idea to lean forward right now, but your views will change as you progress. Try different balances sometimes.

Lol, well I scored tsuki. Then i was playing passivly so they gave me hansoku. Then he scored kote. Then I ran out of bounds.
I played like an idiot after I got that point, but now I know better, and learned a great deal from that experience.
