Some people don't stop being amazed by how ignorant some people can be. You're right we should really care anymore, ignorance is something we should be callused to (especially us) and probably something I just wrote was ignorant. It's the same responses always, who cares. Why bother showing some situational wisdom towards this to fill in the blanks that are normally filled in other places like this by someone else? There's nothing to really say.

Probably because half the people on this forum were once wall-hanging backyard-Bud-k-twirlers at least ONCE in their lives.
Only there was no Youtube to shock and awe the rest of the world until only recently.
Those of you who had even ONE Bruce Lee, Star Wars,(Including the one with Princess Leia in the slave outfit..) or Sho Kosugi posters adorning your walls as a teenager know who you are.....
Aaaaaaahhhh.....
The truth of that last statement is simply delicious, I tell you.

And there's a junction at which someone continues to do that and calls it kendo or joins a dojo. Most of this site is the latter. Most of the youtubes is the former.

When I was in Cubs (the younger version of Scouts) we made Paper Mashie helmets and were given cardboard tubes (about 1 meter long), Then sent outside to wage war on each other (while helmets vs Black helmets).
Now that would have made a good youtube video.
I remember having to retreat down the hill side as I got a few to many Black caps offside by beating them around the head a bit to effective.
20 years on not much has changed
P.S. Princess Leia in the slave outfit was hot.

Because most of them are hilariously funny!!! If you peeked over your backyard fence and saw someone doing this in their yard, youd laugh your knickers off .
We never got to do cubs, but the next best thing was tipping over a couple of 44gallon drums, sitting on them waving a stick around pretending to be knights with lances. Some of my best memories as a kid. Im amazed noone lost an eye. :dead: You also got covered in diesel from head to toe... :D

Exactly my points. We all USED TO do this, when we were children...and of course its hilarious. I wouldn't even pay attention, but he was just so damn serious. The best part of his video is the "rei" at the start of the video, complete with cocking his head to the side like he's about to really go to war with somebody. He erased all the negative comments people have left, guess he's a touchy samurai.

It's fun to laugh at them, but if they're so convinced they're right and have no desire to learn real JSA there's not much point in bothering them.
I do wonder, though, how anyone could possibly conceive that throwing a sword in the air would ever be a good idea. Unless you wanted to die very quickly. Or annoy a low-flying pigeon.

It reminds me of when me and my brother were still young enough to go out with the family camcprder and do stuff like this. If you want advice from an old hand, you should keep your feet little more than a shoulder's length apart, back straight, and your stance improves tenfold. You'll never fall over again>_<
or:
this fight really sucks... you know, bokken is not an arm, its a part of your body and your feet movements are just pathetics. Last, i'd not like to talk about your guard... oh, and bokkens cannot hit each other with the cutting part of it... so it represents a katana and that brokes when the cutting parts hits together.

Why do we bother?
Maybe we are not perfect, maybe we are not that far removed from a teenage mutant ninjer wannabe, maybe we say to ourselves "I'm WAY better than that!". Maybe we also care - we care enough to want these people to stop, and we care enough about our arts to resent what we perceive as mockery.
True, there was no YouTube back in the 80's, but I can't imagine myself ever wanting to upload videos of me swashbuckling at 13. I'm sure the same could be said for the vast majority of us.
Conversely, Kyronthekitsune, for example, puts up videos of himself firing an airsoft AK-47. Fine. He's pretending it has recoil. Er, ok... He states that he wanted to digitally edit muzzle flash onto the video. Umm...
Unlike a hastily written reply, possibly while one's blood is up, a considerable more amount of time and effort is needed to upload a video. Enough time to consider editing, re-shooting or just forgetting the whole thing. If you're still ready to show the world, then be ready to accept comments you may not like. Especially if you're pretending to be something you're not.
More likely than not, someone reading this now is disagreeing with me. They may have a valid counter argument. They may even be able to rip my thought processes to shreds. How do I react then? Were I to respond violently (on line tantrum), I'm sure you'd make judgments regarding my maturity.
Maybe we don't care enough. Maybe we care too much. I just don't know.

However, being a kid is all about making mistakes, and maybe it is better for them to get laughed at online than come out with something in real life and get a crack in the teeth for it.
Keep posting nonsense, guys - we'll keep taking the piss and you can all learn from it and become better human beings... :)

I think he recieved enough negative responses to his videos to change his tune, to at least appear he wasn't being serious. That way he avoids the negative comments. I saw a number of others post some hilarious comments under his video, to which he responded with some violent remarks. Of course all negative posts, including his threats to others, were removed from his comments section.

He's been civil to me (username: Strewthbruce) at least. I suspect that it's because I started off politely and friendly, with a question to confirm what he's doing and then explaining that some people don't like it and why, and hinting that he could get some good advice if he cares to listen.
If he hadn't responded politely, it would be open season.:devious:

Oh yeh, this guy is quite famous around here. I think he's the one who "developed" his own sword style. Forgot what it was called, Ken something...anyway, yeh its like sword twirlers have their own on-line federation. Like you said Dave, if you check out the comments they post their own gradings of each other. My favorite on that vid is Mr. Roach's explanation of how kendo wouldn't work in real life, cuz real life doesn't have rules, and his style is designed for no holds-barred fighting. I also love the comments some of his fans left. Hilarious. This individual's vids are some of my favorite to laugh at because he must do some hilarious pose about 20 times in each one. Check out classics like...
1. The Double Arm Pump/ After twirling the sword to point behind you, and when it has come to a stop under your armpit, tense both of your arms up and pretend you're lifting an invisible barbell. Don't forget to scream.
2. The Ground Pound/ With one knee on the ground, and one leg bent to the side, pound the palm of one of your fists into the ground between your legs. Stare at the ground for a brief moment, then raise your head slowly and wear the most dramatic face possible.
3. The Worm Destroyer/ Whenever using any weapon with a sharp or pointed tip, make sure to launch it javelin-style into the dirt or grass. This must be done with the attitude " Get off of my amazing hands you clumsy weapon!".
4. Double Dump/ A variation of the Worm Destroyer. So you're twirling two swords? Why not launch both of them into the earth...AT THE SAME TIME!!!
5. Iron Lungs/ Like the crouched position of the Ground Pound, but draw it out as long as possible by heaving your chest and back three or four times before the dramatic stare.
6. Kung Fu Abs/ Remove shirt. Tense upper body like never before. Make a kung fu kiai as you move your right hand (two fingers pointed up, the rest folded)from your face down to your navel, then straight in front of you. Don't forget to stare at your own body the whole time. Keep that chin tucked.
7. Lookin' at a Tree/ Look up at a tree.

example- "How many sir?"

"I'm sorry, we don't have a smoking section." Cue music

Having read all the post on this I’ve just watched the youtube vid from the guy TPRoach, and…
… I found it 'entertaining'. The ‘post production’ values and production values in general in the vid. are very good imo. I’ve seen a lot worse from professional companies charging thousands of pounds for their services.
As for his skills: he undoubtedly has them; good hand eye coordination and balance. If you take it for what it is, it’s great.
If you want to be ‘critical’ then yes – lots technically wrong with what he is doing. I can’t comment too much on his sword skill as I’m too inexperienced but during the vid he throws in a couple of spinning ‘crescent kicks’ and a jumping ‘front kick’ (TKD style-eee).
Now, Taekwondo is something I’ve been practicing for a number of years and dearly love. Okay, his crescent kick would have delivered what little power it had well past his intended target and his front kick would most likely have ended up with him badly damaging or breaking most of his toes (along the way he also demonstrates one or two passable Cover Drives (cricket) that might have made the boundary on a small Village Green pitch).
I guess my point is that being passionate about taekwondo I don’t particularly take offense at his attempts at these techniques. Why would I? Finding his imitation of one of my favourite arts disrespectful would seem to me a little intolerant on my part. If he professed to be a 5th Dan Master in taekwondo then it would be obvious to anybody watching this, with a little training that he simply wasn’t.
Okay, my blood pressure did jump a little when I saw him stick his swords (presumably iaito) into the ground.
However, it seems to really wind people up when ‘backyard ninjas’ post on youtube with stuff like this. I wonder why people don’t just content themselves with saying, ‘hey this guy has some real skill, and he’d most likely make a good taekwondo player or iaido/kendo practitioner if he ever cared to get some proper tuition.’, or just think ‘what an arse’ to themselves and laugh.

The video illustrates well the fantasies that movies are based on versus the reality of the arts. The man in the “mushashi” keikogi is in fact Kataoka-sensei, head of the New York Kendo club, nanadan in Kendo (and I believe also in Iaido) and the most competent teacher. He also has an acting career. Not that I know him that well, but, having enjoyed his practice and his company in a few occasions, I somehow doubt that he had a lot of influence in the decisions about the movie’s wardrobe. And perhaps neither he had about that moustache. :D :D

Oh god, the Japanese is genius.
Basically, they used babelfish, and it makes about as much sense as you'd expect. And they've named their organisation in a mix of Japanese and Korean, and spelled it with different kanji at the start and the end of the video.

Wow...I have never seen Japanese put together in such a haphazard manner. Not to mention that they show the random asian images to show they are "one" with the earth or some random nonsense. Other than the expert village videos, this has to be the worst I have seen.

I loved the 海のそこに右
"(turn) Right to the bottom of the ocean"!
I recognised a lot of the stuff - the punching displays were originally Karate kata (I picked Heian sandan, Heian godan and Kanku dai) but stopped part way so they could do some static punching (Taekwondo etc. is rooted in Japanese Karate of the 1930s and 40s); the jo work was uncannily similar to Aikido jo-no-awase no.7 and then just tachi-dori.
I get the feeling that the fake Japanese and generic East Asian background (hey, all Asian looks the same, right? ) was an attempt to justify their system and make it seem authentic.

I make the assumption that they failed! They would have done at the karate dojo I used to go to. No power, no spirit, no strong stances, sloppy techniques. A 9th kyu pass if the examiner was feeling generous maybe at the most.

It's 'aikijujutsu' - with 'shonin' written 証人 rather than 諸人 as shown at the start of the other video.
諸人 = various people
証人 = witness (as in 'prosecution witness')
Either way it still makes no sense. Unless they exclusively train people who testify in court.
Look you idiotic child, I KNOW JAPANESE. CERTIFIED JLPT Level 2. THE KANJI IS NOT DIFFERENT. I dont even know what babel fish is. 証人 拳 道 Because his martial art is part Korean he uses "Kwon". In Japanese it literally translates into : Shou Nin Kobushi Dou. Witness Fist The Way of

I did! I did! Obviously not enough.
Why, oh why do these people seem unable to take criticism? The black belt grading kata was appalling in their video. Kata on mats! Upright stances with straight legs and knees! Blocks with all the power of a soggy cucumber? And they couldn't punch their way out of a wet paper bag! And I've seen more spirit in an empty whisky glass!
Okay, what they do in their own dojo is their own affair and good luck to them. But to expose themselves on video in that way - why?

Now they're claiming a 2000 year old family system including ninjutsu (of course  )
Then comes a short series of portraits of some old gentlemen, and the one at 00:58 is none other than Okinawan karate master Sakugawa (ninjutsu, huh?). Later, at 02:45, we have a photo of a senior aikido instructor (Kato Sensei? I've forgotten the name) popping up in the "weapons" section.

The SNDK crowd are now approving comments before they get displayed on the garden video, so I'm doubtful whether my latest will ever make it to the comments list.
In case it doesn't, I first corrected them on their assertion over the 諸/証 thing, then asked them why they didn't acknowledge Ueshiba as the author of the poem, and what connections they had with Ueshiba.
Then a bit more on the poor level of Japanese.
I'm hoping someone can help identify the gentleman who appears at 00:54 on the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YcjLv1bnaE video, so I'll have a watertight case to put on their comments.

Being banned from commenting on his videos, I'm not sure if I could do anything at this point, but I could try making a post on his profile and see what happens. All I said was that it's hard to take a martial art seriously when a video that promotes it doesn't proofread and showing random moves with no obvious purpose. But he chose to react in that manner and I don't think that there is anything that we could say to make him see things our way. Further spamming his pages with irate comments, however, will only make things worse, not only for him, but for us as well.

I didn't bash their art, I mentioned linguistic inaccuracies and inappropriate use of photos in their video. I thought that was "showing my expertise". Not good enough for some...
