I have a pain on the ball of my LEFT foot. It is bothering me pretty all practice time. The End of practice I can barely walk.
I run 4-miles two times a week but I never have a pain at all. I found that medical websites say it is relative Morton’w toe. I have the second toe is longer that the Big toe..

Am I doing wrong footwork? Any one had/have same problem?

How Tabi works?… Don’t want to put it, but I’ll try it if I have to..

Thanks in advance

Well, tabi will protect only the skin, it is almost a sock... maybe it's your fumikomiashi, maybe it's too strong. We usually got heel pain here because we train at a hard floor, made of ciment, not a soft wooden floor...

Forget it... fumikomi will never give to you a pain on the left foot... sorry about that. If the pain is on the flesh, not on bones, a tabi will help.

I have the same problem, it is the joint, not the flesh. My Sensei told me that I have a weak point, not the technique and I should take a rest until it is gone. So now, I limb on one foot to try to give the left a break.

I got this problem for a few days and I realized that my weight was all out of whack and all of it was on the ball of my left foot. When I made sure to make my weight more evenly balanced on both feet then it went away. Check your weight distribution, it may help, if not, anyone else got suggestions? I think sometimes I may have had my left heel too high as well which was probably making more pressure on that part of my foot. Check that too. There's my 2 beginner cents for ya.

If its on the bone, you mat have a bone spur (or bur). Its a calcium deposit that builds up by the bone. I developed one on my heel. If you have one you should be able to feel a lump under the skin in the area that is painful.

If rest, balancing your weight distribution, and technique are right, see a physician. A bone spur can often be disolved with a steroid injection (painful but it often works). In some cases though steroids won't break it up and surgery is the only way to remove the spur.
The tabi might help a bit even if it is something like a spur as it makes you more inclined to freely slide the foot instead of moving it up and down. So it might be of use while trying to rest and heal the foot.

Causes that I am familer with of this syndrome are as follows:
1. Left foot is crooked, angled out instead of pointing straight ahead. This causes you to rotate on the ball everytime you move forward. Do you often get a blister or have a huge callus centered on the ball of your left foot?
2. Left heel is too high putting all the pressure directly on the ball.
3. Feet are too far apart causing uneven weight distribution, if you tend to load the back foot alot with this that would stress the left ball of your foot.
4. Any combination of the above

I have a simular problem and the advice everyone has given about balance and weight distribution are things I am working on and they do make a difference. One additional thing is you may be too much up on the toes therefore most of your body weight is on that point.

If you are like me, it’s not a bone spur, but more like a tightening up of the nerves or muscles, which can lead to a serious problem. Does it feel like your bones are pushing out the bottom of your foot? Does lots of suriashi cause it to act up? Flexing the bottom of you foot will help. At practice I use the edge of the stairs or chair (securely placed) and gently push down the ball of my foot. Sometimes it hurts a bit but then looses up and I can go on.

After keiko (and after washing your feet) massage your foot. Gently bend and flex. The last “stretch” I do is standing on a golf or tennis ball and slowly rolling it under the ball of my foot. You can control the pressure if needed by using your body weight. BTW I am not talking about a balancing act here. My other foot is flat on the ground and I am hold onto something secure.

Occasionally, I have also had my chiropractor work on my foot. This is not a “cracking” kind of chiropractic but more like acupressure. Very helpful.

These things have made a big difference. I don’t know how long you have been practicing kendo but I don’t suffer near as much as I used to when I first started. Good luck and don’t hesitate to see a professional if things aren’t improving.

Maybe your doctor can get a copy of this article to help him/her evaluate this problem:
