I've been wondering what the "average" shinai length is for kendokas in the U.S.A. Please vote in the poll and post a few words to support your opinion.
My current shinai is 38 inches long.

It's not inches. A size 39 shinai is 3 shaku, 9 sun long. One shaku is about a foot.

I think that the 38 or 39 that appears on your shinai refers to 3.8 or 3.9 shaku and not 38 or 39 inches... i could be wrong though :D
peace and love

And what does it mean this shaku word???

A shaku is defined from the metric system. 1 m=3.3 shaku exactly since 1891
the wiki article about shaku (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaku) :p Inches suck!
My 39 shinai is 119cm long, which is 3.93 shaku. I think that the bamboo slats would mesure 3.9 shaku with all the leather parts removed.

shaku is an old measurement of length from Japan.
Westerners used feet and inches; Japanese used Shaku and sun
Shaku (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaku) Not sure why they felt it was necessary to compare shaku to AU and light years... weird guys ;)
You can even use google to convert shaku to metres... or to feet if you are old school.

Follow the links I posted above.
p.s You should be able to tell the difference between 39 inches (99cm) and 47 inches (120 cm). If you can't you are going to have problems with kendo.

As ever, the king of understatement.
