Ive put this in general because I want the opinion of everyone, Kendoka, Naginataka (is that the right term?).
Anyway.. I was wondering if Naginata Kote could be used for Kendo. Does anyone know of any reasons why they cant be used?
Are there any official rulings?
And...
The Kote I find on the net for Naginata are generally larger stitch than Kendo Kote.. (smallest being around 4mm) .. would this make them softer than thier tighter stitched counterparts?
any help would be greatly appreciated.. :) :)

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be allowed although I am sure in a formal competition you might have to get it all cleared up before using them. But I am sure they would be fine for normal kendo use. You might even benefit from the extra motility of that index finger.
I think the larger stitching does make it a little more softer and more flexable. Cause we need to be quite moveable with our arms more so than the kendo folk. I found out that you want them to be a little loose (I had mine on pretty tight until I found out). As for softness, I can't say. My kote are hand-me-downs. I have no idea how old they are but they are already worn in which is good I guess.

Hi Emit,
Actually there is another thread about this but I am unable to find it. I think it was Hamish that said something along the lines of "You have a better feel for the shinai with a seperated index finger, but it lacks padding where you need it." What I gathered from that was you can use them but you're going to get hurt. I know its hard on your wallet to have to buy both.
