Its 2007 and we just had the 5th 8dan tournament (全日本選抜剣道八段優勝大会), so im not sure which this is. If its not an actual shiai it could be a demonstration match.

I noticed that he used jodan footwork (left foot forward) while using gyaku nito (daito in left hand). I thought most people use regular footwork with gyaku nito, or am I wrong?

You're right. Toda sensei used to play jodan. That's why his nito footword is a bit unorthodox.
