Again it is said to be the 1999 8th dan tournament, but maybe it isn't.

Very interesting matchl It appeared that Kai found his stance unfavorable against nito and switched to itto.

Gyaku jodan against gyaku nito is kind of a stalemate. I do gyaku jodan from time to time against regular jodan and often have a slight advantage because they are not used to it. When I play nito I have long sword in my right hand so if someone does jodan they are wide open.
Viagra? I recently read a study about distance runners using viagra for training at high altitude. Apparently it relaxes the vessels in the lungs too.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
That's a very interesting clip. Kai sensei's technique is reverse grip only in jodan, in tsubazeriai he changes to conventional grip in case he needs to follow up with waza from chudan. Then when he is at toma he changes grip again. I've never seen gyaku jodan before.
There is a very interesting 'story' to this shiai. Toda sensei seems content to hold his ground for a long time. Only later does he really apply pressure to Kai sensei. This is where Kai seems to revert to chudan: actually it is because Toda is preventing him from getting the space he needs to retreat and reverse his grip. From here Kai is unsettled. He really throws away the second point.
I noticed the shinpan were quite fussy about awarding points to Toda sensei. They wanted to make sure they were perfect. Whether this is a bias against nito I don't know. Toda sensei is a very interesting character in Japanese kendo.
Thanks for posting this link.

What taikai is it? It says 全日本八段大会 in the replay, but 1999? Is this a different shiai to the 全日本選抜剣道八段優勝大会 (which is what is usually regarded as the 8dan tournament, but which started in 2003) ?
(see here (http://www.kendo.or.jp/competition/leading/index.html#01) for Japanese and here (http://www.kendo-fik.org/english-page/8-dan-Taikai-2007.html) for this years result in English)
Actually, I have video of this same taikai from a long time ago... so it must be different.

It's the former. And yes, the date of the taikai is Jan. 31, 1999. Maybe it's the precursor of the invitational tournament?

Age and experience also has something to do with it.

Maeda-sensei and Hyun-sensei recently taught an SEUSKF shimpan seminar at our dojo. During the practice matches, we had two nito players. As I recall, Maeda-sensei explained that nito strikes must be very good to score, because katate (one-handed) waza are held to a higher standard: they must be very strong in order to be a believable "cut" for purposes of yuko-datotsu.
So, that might be a clue to the scoring "bias" against nito: one handed sword strikes must be delivered with a lot of power and very proper form in order to be "believable" as a proper cut with a sword...
...whether that "bias" is offset by the arguably superior defensive capabilities of nito is another question! :confused2

Wish I had been at that seminar. I love Maeda and Hyun.
