Thank God for Kitano Takeshi. This remake version of Zatoichi is now running at the Venice Film Festival.

I'll say! Can't wait for the LA opening. Thanks for the tip.

I am looking forward to seeing it, but I am always skeptical about remakes. Takeshi is quite excited, I guess its the only one of his films that has won any sort of award.

Is it just me or am I seeing a lot of familiar faces in the trailer?
in any case it looks promising, like most of Kitano's movies. just have to wait till it comes out down here

Ahem, forgot about Golden Lion for Hana Bi?

The trailer looks pretty skookum. I just like Takeshi, no matter what he does (ok, he couldn't save Johnny Mnemonic, but I'll forgive him for that). I just hope they don't dub it.
Unfortunately, it might be awhile before we get to see it. Zatoichi has been picked up by Miramax.

I watched it the other day (here in Japan). It's fantastic! But people are still wondering why Kitano has blonde hair. Here he is known as a comedian so he kind of gets away with it but outside of Japan I can't help thinking that some high and mighty academics will try and add significance to his hair colour...

We were discussing the film over at e-Budo a while back... but I think I killed the conversation with my negativism. :disapp:

I have not seen it yet, but I figured it would be that way from the commercials. I think I would prefer corn-syrup and red dye instead of CG blood. Also I could probably do without an Edo-jidai Riverdance sceen. I think I'll wait untill it comes out on video to be disappointed. Nothing I hate more than grabbing my ankles at the box office for a crappy movie. Thanks for the review CK!

I can see why most Japanese still see Kitano as a comedian, but hasn't it been a while since he's done a comedy skit? I mean he's been doing some serious stuff for several years now. He does add some funny (albeit dark)bits into his movies though.

Takeshi has a panel show where he (and others) are constantly screwing around no matter how serious the subject may be (ie: OJ Simpson murder trial, Kennedy assasination, etc). He was saying in an interview that, "Beat" Takeshi is the shitkicker, while Kitano is the comedian. He will always be known for comedy but that doesn't mean that he won't be taken seriously in other roles. For example, the movie Gohatto (or Taboo); the cast of that movie was almost entirely made up of comedians.
You have to understand that in Japan it doesn't matter if you have any talent or not, as long as your hot you can be put into any role. Not that I think Takeshi is with out talent or is a passing fad.
