Hi everybody, I´ve been searching for a while about shinais, bio treatment etc. I decided to have a good taikai shinai. I´m thinking of spending some money in a good madake shinai, I´ve seen that eguchi´s and e-bogu´s shinai don´t have the same quality always and this may differ a lot from one shinai to another even if they´re of the same type, I understand that this may be normal but I´m not willing to spend on a shinai in vain since I have carbon shinai going without a problem and a Busong dobari I received as a gift already.

I took a look at sankei´s catalog and page, and they seem to be very proud of their shinais, has anyone tried them, some advice would be nice. thx.

Sankei are very famous with their shinais. As I said in the "keikogi" topic Sankei are official sponsor of our federation and most of our members use their shinai. The quality is absolutely the best especially for the "Handmade Madake".
In their catalogue there is a plenty of types so it is sure you will find a suitable one for you. If you are dobari fan the best proportion quality/price is Tokusei Seibu - HK-14. I presonally use the Saijou with extra large grip(HK-07) and I'm very happy with it - the balance is very good and also the quality of the bamboo. Because of the large grip the tip feels very light but the hits are thick and dense like the koto shinais.

oh and also, I don´t like large grip... quite strange for westerns but anyway, I also wonder which are actually "normal grip because many say large grip, extra large and other things that I don´t fully understand. thx for the inputs already!

Small grip is something between the grip of shinai 38 and 37.
Normal grip is just like your #39 Hasegawa carbon shinai.
Large grip is just a little bit larger than the grip of regular bamboo 39.
Extra large grip is real large and thick. It is suitable for bigger hands and tall person.

I have a Jissen Gata "Saijou Seibu" (whatever that means). Now, I'm not the shinai expert, but troughout my career I went trough around a dozen (different ones) - from that perspective, it's the best shinai I ever used.

Has a distinctive 'solid' feel to it and a bit more tip heavy than your usual (korean - ilgum or e-kendo ones) dobari. It took some time getting used to that new feel, but now I'm loving it.

It's just too pricy (bout 50$ including fittings) for everyday use, but as soon as it breaks, I'll get a new one from sankei.

39" Hizen Kotou Koshirae - Thick Straight (Benkei). I was lucky enough to recieve one of these as a gift. Great balance, and effortlessly glides through the air but damn exspensive. The thicker handle was a new feel, but now I much prefer it to thin grip. Just takes some time to get used.

39" Jissen Doubari (Tokusei Seibu) is another alternative which is cheaper but also does the job.

thx everyone, Boguzen has many shinais in common with sankei and they seem cheaper, I have not done the maths yet, but it looks cheaper, I suppose they´re the same quality... I´m looking forward to decide just for 1 shinai D:

Also try Tozando's shinai. I bought the $20-30 range ones and they're great! I have two of them for over 8 months without a crack on it even though I don't oil them too often. The only problem is they ship from Japan, so it's a bit expensive for shipping.
