I heard that those that are interested in kendo in Singapore has to go through some kind of audition if they want to join the Singpore kendo dojo. Is that true??? If it is, that's pretty messed up! It makes kendo over there sound exclusive.

I know I am dragging up a old post, but I was searching for this very same topic.
I have just completed a 8 week begingers course that was taught at a Rec Center, now that the course is over all participants where invited to continue their Kendo at the main Dojo, but there would be a audition that one would have to take.
Basically they are looking for someone who understands that basics, good Kamae, good Spirt and good Ki (sp?).
Am I right to assume this is just a way for the Sensei and Sempi to weed out the ones who are not giving 100% effort?
I am excited and cant wait for my audition, but I am also nervous at the same time :nervous:

I don't think Kendo is exclusive in SGP. What happened is that there are limited Senseis in Kendo in SGP. The number of applicants are very large and 1 Sensei cannot conduct such a large class. Attention may not be sufficiently given to the students. Therefore, a 'selection' was conducted to allow the Sensei to pick the students with the correct attitude/enthusiasm etc. etc.
I think it would be a necessary process given the large numbers. I don't agree that SGP kendo is messed up. There are other avenues of instruction in kendo at the university and polytechnic as well to cater to students. In fact I think kendo is well organised in a small country like SGP.
An audition is but a process....the real training only starts later....

I think many dojos do something like this, even if it is not as formal. Lots of places have a beginners course, and won't let people into the general practice until they have reached a certain level. For those most part, I think a 8 week beginners course is probably audition enough, as people without the right attitude probably won't put up with the blisters and sore muscles.

man, i didn't know this thread was mine mwahah. It's been a while. Anyway, my initial thought was that these senseis were going to reject those that didn't have any talent whatsoever. Good thing I was proved wrong.
