I thought I saw a post here with video of experimental Men from Korea but I can't find it. One of my dojo mate has some medical problem that prevents him from practicing. He's not supposed to rattle his brain so he's desperately llokig for a way to get a hands on that experimental Men. Can someone point me to a thread here or Youtube ( if it was from there )?

Thanks. I'd also entertain ideas that would enable him to practice Kendo.. Double Men Pad doesn't work BTW..

No-one remembers the video? Noone cares about this person who wants to practice but can't? Do any of you have a connection to Yong-In sports college in Korea?

the men in that video looks more solid and safe on the back of the head, but if we stick to physics, a harder + more solid men won't necessarily mean that the head/brain won't rattle. it might end up rattling more than a normal men (even if it offers more direct bruise and contact protection).

i think the idea would be to make the men somehow softer on the top and the sides so it would absorb all the shock of the cut like a sponge before it even gets to the top and sides of the head/skull. i've seen this type of men protector, that looks like a cleaning sponge that fits into the top of the men.

maybe using a slightly bigger men and covering/lining all the extra space with this type of sponge protection would absorb shock a lot more than a normal men? (though it'd be a pain in the ass to clean i guess).

the men pad i use is the other type, hard pressed cotton that looks just like another bogu 'layer'. i don't think this type of pad would work on your friend...

well, just my 2 euro cents...

cheers

if he is not to 'rattle' his brain, i don't think kendo would be a good idea. there's always a chance someone who doesn't know him well will give rather hard strike to the head that won't be helped with any type of men.

If I remember correctly, the explanation says this Men protects better than the current design and is good for Kids and Old people. I'm assumin the design point is BETTER protection of the head from IMPACT.

This is what I use (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k165/kenzan_kendoka/DSC00003.jpg):

It's a foam pad from a local sewing and craft shop covered by a bit of used T-shirt fabric (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k165/kenzan_kendoka/DSC00004.jpg).

Yes OW, you are really OLD - NOT

I don't think living 60+ years of healthy and active life qualifies you as OLD..

Thank for the post but pad isn't good enough as he has experimented with various pads. I listened to the video more carefully and the announcer said it gives NO IMPACT to the head. I doubt that there's NO impact but the manufacturer of the Men makes Motorcycle Helmets. Given that, I wouldn't be surprised that this Men actually provides excellent protection. I just hope I can get a hands on this so my student can continue to practice Kendo he dearly loves. He still comes to practice every week and sits on the sideline. It breaks my heart..

Yeah, it was an old KW thread. While I couldn't remember the old thread, I crossed posted this video to a Chinese website...that's how I was able to retrieve it.

Good luck to your student!

The theory behind the construction of a motorcycle helmet is that it's made up of several layers of lamination, the inside of the shell being covered with some crushable material, such as expanded styrofoam, which will help disperse the shock of striking the inside of the shell. If a rider were to be sliding on the helmet, the laminate construction is designed to peel away layer by layer, so that it doesn't overheat from friction.

I think that if your student were to use such a men, that he would probably not have to worry about head trauma. I noticed in the video that the person who was wearing that men didn't seem to experience any downward force that "rattled" his brain. There is definitely downward force, but the solid construction and the internal padding of the men seem to disperse it nicely.

I hope your student is able to use such a men and that he is able to return to kendo. In the meantime, why must he sit on the sideline? Can't he at least pair with a motodachi, or is it that he must sit on the sideline during jigeiko?
