So I watched this movie yesterday. Yes, I purchased this from playasia.com and paid $41.00. Not cheap...

I watched this with my wife. Very typical Japanese samurai movie. Director wanted show the life of samurai so it contains pretty much everything including his job(the samurai hated), life style(life with his wife and family), status of samurai during this period, agony over his pride and family, and little bit of action...

If you want some action packed sword fighting movie, this is not for you. If you want to relax and want to know the lifestyle of samurai, it is pretty well made movie.

I watched all three Samurai movies, The Twilight Samurai, The Hidden Blade and now Bushi no Ichibun. They are very similar story lines...

They are all about poor Samurai, struggle with family but have problem with authority.

Making of Bushi no Ichibun

The samurai movie Bushi no Ichibun starring Kimura Takuya starts in Japan on December 1st, 2006.

This movie is the third in the trilogy by director Yamada Yoji, following Tasogare Seibei (The Twilight Samurai) in 2002 and Oni no Tsume (The Hidden Blade) in 2004. Tasogare Seibei is certainly a must rent, the best movie I have seen in a long time and everything a period samurai movie ought to be. Yamada Yoji is also famous for his long running Tora-san movies, that came out twice a year, in summer and fall, from 1969 to 1996. As is true of the other two movies in this series, Bushi no Ichibun is based on a short story by the period writer Fujisawa Shuhei. A collection of his short stories has been published in English as The Bamboo Sword: And Other Samurai Tales.

In Bushi no Ichibun, Kimura plays Mimura Shinnojo, a samurai who is blinded by poison when serving as a food-taster for his lord. Due to the suggestions of his irresponsible relatives, his wife seeks a patron, Shimada Toyo, for financial support in maintaining their household. But, will his wife's sacrifice cause Shinnoji to lose his honor, or give him an opportunity to prove it?

Thanks for the review!

I've been looking for the movie, but I guess I won't be in such a hurry to watch it now.

Ame Agaru rules! :D

Actually, it's been long time since i saw a good samurai movie.
All-time favorite is naturally the one's of Akira Kurosawa.

When watched The Last Samurai with friends, I laughed my a** off!

Twilight Samurai I loved. My favourite jidaigeki outside of Kurosawa's work.

Kakushi Ken Oni no Tsume I liked, for me it was better aesthetically than Twilight Samurai, but the story was much too similar and less well-balanced.

Bushi no Ichibun I will see, but I'm not a big fan of Kimura Takuya and if the story's yet again similar I'm worried I won't enjoy it that much. I very much doubt it'll be a bad movie though.

Haven't seen it myself, but local reviews indicate that Kimura Takuya is only good a playing himself.

Bushi no Ichibun is marketed as a "kandousaku". Tsutaya won't be getting any business out of me for that one...

When I first saw Semishigure (back in 2005) I could only understand about half of what the characters were saying, but I loved it anyway... :D

Yoji Yamada is awesome. If you like his films I suggest "When the last sword is drawn" by Yojiro Takita, another great color Japanese period piece.

I recently saw "Samurai Rebellion" on Criterion disk, highly recomended non-Kurosawa Toshiro Mifune film. A good time even if just to watch Mifune playing the strong willed, likeable samurai he does best.

I saw it with my old lady unaware (until just before arriving at the theatre) that I would have to sit through 2 hours of KimuTaku. It turned out to be pretty good as Yamada Yoji (as always) did an excellent job of capturing that time period and putting it up on screen. I wouldn’t write it off.
Agreed, Semishigure is boss.

Well I'll be renting Semishigure on your recommendations at some point.

I saw Bushi no Ichibun with the wife. Thought it was OK, but hearing about how cool Kimutaku was for an hour and a half got right on my tits.

When sleeping around one should always use protection.

So where does one buy English sub-titled, region 1 DVD "Semishigure"? I can't find it anywhere.

There isn't one, as far as I know. Last time I checked it hadn't been translated and wasn't available outside Japan.

Its as oroshi says.

There are loooooooads of jidai-gekki movies over here that never make it abroad. An example would be GANRYUJIMA (http://www.ntv.co.jp/nomo/ganryujima/).... by far the best miyamoto musashi movie out there by...... a long run.

edit: im not v.interested in Musashi, but this film is actually funny/interesting.

edit2: this is my favourite samurai movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0170544/)

Ah I saw Ganryujima, great twist in the boat to the island. The guy playing Musashi did my head in a bit though.

SF was pretty funny. Any news on the new Tsubaki Sanjuro? I have a feeling it will be pretty shit.

I've seen SF but not Ganryujima. I'll have to take a trip to Tsutaya next time I'm in Japan, I think (I think I still have my card).

Too much milk before keiko = vomiting. Those kids are going to find out the hard way...
