anybody know off hand if koban shinai (oval grip) or the "fat boy" tsuka shinai are legal/allowed for shinsa?

... I keep thinking I heard/read somewhere that they were not...

just curious...

In a similar vein. I recently heard that carbon shinai's are not legal for shinsa. Is this true?

As an oval grip user I hope you're wrong.

As far as I am aware ive never seen any regulations as to the use of shinai in gradings.

I cant see how kobans, fatboys, nor carbons would be dissalowed.

Of-course, maybe there are some local renmei stipulations.

I use a koban grip almost exclusively. My carbon shinai is oval gripped, and my favorite bamboo shinai is also oval gripped. I still carry two round gripped bamboo shinais in my bag, but prefer the koban grip over the round.

I've used my bamboo koban shinai in tournaments with no problem. I don't use the carbon shinai because its balance doesn't feel right for me, so I have relegated it to practice.

As far as I've seen in the ZNKR rules, they are concerned more with length, weight, and condition of the shinai. The grip is inconsequential, as long as there are no modifications which change the characteristics of the shinai.

joekc6nlx is right!

I only met with regulations about:
Maximum shinai length -120cm(adult)
Minimum weight -510g/male,440g/female
Minimum sakigawa diameter- Sorry can't remember
Sakigawa length -5cm
And it's always under shiai regulations
Under shinsa regulation says nothing about shinai, only what waza is required, length of practicing the current grade, and the age of participant.

I´ve taken my 1 dan and 2 dan test with a carbon shinai and no one even asked if it was right or wrong, also, many friends have done the same and had no problem... I´ve never heard something like failing for using koban grip shinai or so either.

Rogers, I used an oval grip shinai when I took my nidan test and no one had a problem with it.

No one even checked my one. Could have had a floppy tsuru and a sandwich in the tsuka and no one would have been any the wiser.

I concur, I had a carbon shinai for my sandan examination and all previous (the same one BTW :) ) and no problem, also never heard, that it could be a problem, perhaps for higher levels ... maybe ....

Ok, thanks for the replies...

(Yes, I've used carbon shinai for my last two or three testings as well, FWIW)...

Some judges might look down at things like carbon shinai and tetron hakama for higher level gradings. Wouldn't worry for sandan and lower.
