This is teaser link for Chiba sensei's jodan lecturing. Sorry it is all in Japanese. It shows the basic of Jodan. Is it just me or his Jodan is slightly different than what you have learned from Jodan Kata ??

In that case, I'd say.. doesn't really look any different to me...
Camera angle for the video might make it look a little different, though.

I might be wrong, but I noticed,
1) Angle of his shnai when it is in Jodan.. It is more straigh instead of tilted..
2) His left hand is about three fist away from his left eyes. I was told one fist away forehead..
I thought it was interesting... Again, my kendo is not strong enough to point out anything...

Chiba sensei is known for these slight variations. Here's a part of an interview with Chiba sensei. (There was some link/translation to it on this forum.)
How Chiba sensei's techniques are different
Kamae: It is normal to place the left fist slightly above the left eye, about a fist's separation away from the head, but Chiba sensei does things slightly differently. He places it in front of the left eye, about two fists' distance away, saying that this makes maneuvering the shinai go more smoothly.
According to Chiba sensei, this position allows, for a start, smooth avoidance of kote strikes. Also, since the left hand is further forward than normal, rapid strikes are possible.

rainmaker -- what you describe is how I understand jodan to be... but I guess maybe the camera angle is playing a trick on my own eyes, considering what Paul has said above... (!!)

This is from the guy who had a burning desire to hold that DVD in his hands, while in the meantime find a way to buy his own copy. Indeed I bought it short after.
My intentions were honest since the beginning.
Is this a satisfying answer mr. JSchmidt?

How about advertising ? People buying more DVD since they found about this dvd ?? If I get enough resistance, then I don't have any problem of withdrawing this video. But that means most of video files in media section has to be withdraw too. Isn't it ???

One more thing. I happen to believe that this is from your ego.. You have been hassling me over this video and I KNEW that you will eventually have your opinion about this post again. You know what? There are hundreds of videos in media section. Mochida sensei's partial video, all the competition videos, Kendo's Gruelling Challenge, music videos, and tons of video files. Now, I don't see you making any comment about such pirate media files uploaded.
I know you are doing jodan for sometimes and I do repect that. Unlike most of us, I assume you have chance to visit Japan, possibly train there, or even have friends who can search for this. But we don't have such luxury. This is only way we can share information with each others.
My only conclusion is that maybe somewhere in your thought, you want to be someone who can control the Jodan population outside of Japan or manage the quality of Jodan ???
This is from the guy who asked for a pirate copy of the DVD??:confused2

Probably, but I was referring to this particular video.
In my humble opinion taking 20 minutes out of it are a lot more than simple advertising. That's why I felt concerned and replied like that.

I didn't accused you of anything, please read again what I wrote and how I wrote it. I even clearly stated that I didn't wanted to look rude or unrespectful.

Okay, I am just tired of people who blame me for uploading pirate copy. And yes, I paid for this video when I was in Japan. However, some kendokas strongly oppose to upload a portion of 30,000 yen video lecture, I have decide to make this video private.
I just wanted to share this video with our fellow kendokas who just does not have the access to such a great video. It is almost next to impossible to buy it outside of Japan. However, I have to admit that it is still illegal to post it on youtube for public share.

Yes, Ciba Sensei's videos of basics, advanced basics and Jodan are 300,000 yen for the set of all 3. Maybe he will become upset when he sees everything posted on U-Boob. Is this rude or common in America for just a few to pay and then everyone else benefit from "sharing" ?

The reasons why a DVD like this is so expensive, is because the market is so small. If you want to ensure that such DVD's are made in the future, support the effort and buy it.
If people lose money on this kind of DVD's, they wont be made in the future.

Of course, im sure that everyone knows how this works (We all watched those "video piracy is a crime, do not accept it" or whatever ads in cinema etc).
I am just saying that I doubt Chiba-sensei would be in anyway enraged by the fact that people are downloading sections of his DVD for free.
I echo JScmidt's comments. We will never get good value for money this way, if you think the price is to high then don't buy it, you have a choice.

Ok then, if that is so, I suggest you e-mail a link to the videos to Chiba Sensei to confirm how super happy he is about his intelectual property being distributed for free.

Problem is not the money, but most kenshi does not have access to such video.
I do believe that most kendokas are people with integration. I also do believe most of kenshes are willing to pay for such video. However, not many people can travel to Japan nor understand Japanese language to search for such media. Even my Japanese friends were having very hard time to get this video for me.
It is almost impossible for non-Japanese people to get this video. It is clearly made for Japanese market, spoken in Japanese, English subtitle is NOT available. Even worse, DVD code is region 2, so most Americans cannot view such dvd unless they have region free dvd players. Not even advertised in Western market at all. So if supplier doesn't care of us, what option do we have ??
Also, most of Western Jodan kenshis were not aware of such video until I have uploaded in youtube. If kenshi doesn't know the existence of such video, how can there be any demand for such product ? Hopefully people know this dvd now and call e-bogu or e-guchi to get more inventory for us.
Yes, it is WRONG that we have shared such videos on youtube. But I am still happy to let our fellow Jodan kenshes to know about Jodan video.

I can't read Japanese, didn't go to Japan (Well, not around the time I wanted the DVD), yet I managed to get one?.
Ask a friend. If you don't have any Japanese speakers at your dojo, surely some of your fellow dojo-members, must know someone who speaks/reads Japanese and/or travels to Japan every now & then?.

And this makes it ok to misappropriate the material and re-distribute it without the author's permission?.
In terms of the price, there is a better choice, don't buy it, I don't buy stuff that is overpriced, nor tuck it under my jacket and walk out of the shop.
I am sure that If you really want to, you can source this DVD, either thru Japanese speaking Dojo mates or even popping a couple of e-mails around. Being able to download for free just requires less effort so is a lot more tempting, and you can do so if you wish, but you cannot argue that is the only way to get the DVD and there are no other options open to you.
Please understand that I am not being purposefully ignorant or petending to stand on a high horse, I am just saying I disagree with those arguments.

Since when does "it's hard to do the right thing" == "it's OK to do the wrong thing"?
I would say that if I was determined to get it and felt strongly about the cost of the DVD a polite letter to the publishing company or even Chiba Sensei himself might be another option, you may not achieve much but you would have made a point of that in a more dignified way.
Since when does "it's hard to do the right thing" == "it's OK to do the wrong thing"?

Ehem... So before we starts blame about everything, let me clear one thing.
1) Is uploading the Chiba video to youtube is right thing ? No. It is definitely wrong thing to do. I said my previous thread that I am taking off this because it is wrong. So please do not waste your time to tell me it is wrong. I know it is wrong.
2) Is paying $300 for video is good or bad ? It is purely upto you. If this video is essential for your practice, buy one!
3) How hard is it to buy this video ? Very very hard !! Most people didn't know about this video until I have uploaded this. I had about 4000 people watched this video and lot of people asking where they can purchase the video and I have given them a link to buy one in JAPAN. Even Western people in Japan asked me where they can get this.
So yes, I was wrong to upload the video. But yes, I think I have created demand for the video. :):):)

to rainmaker's defense,
Let's see why would someone whose not inspired to be a millionare, and is very good at what they do make a video in "sharing" their knowledge? Oh. right, because the individual in this case (Chiba sensei) believes that proper instruction is of utmost importance to one's development/growth in kendo.
That was the original intention as far as i am concerned, until i am told other wise. (by Chiba sensei himself)
Did he make the video so he can make a fortune off of it?
or rather did Chiba sensei wish to gain a substantial profit from commercial opportunities more than share his knowledge? I think that's only a question he could answer.
suppose if we took this matter to him, I am not so sure if he would bemoan the "pirate-ing" of his instrucstion video or if he would be happier that more people are exposed to what "jodan" kend should look like.
lastly, Rainmaker has already taken the video off of the sharing website anyways. so what get your panties in a bundle?
