I contacted National Geographic in Canada and they said they do not make this video. It was created by some other company (presumably in japan) and just aired on their network. If anyone could find where this could be purchased I would love to know.

I finally got around to seeing this movie, man its excellent! Never knew how difficult the Hachi Dan test was. My only qualm w/ it were the damn annoying Korean subtitles, especially when english text was being shown and they overlapped. :confused2

you know they had to write an essay about 'the sword is the mind'...
what if you can't write japanese... would they accept english? because if they dont, then it would be completely restricting foreigners from the higher levels...(not that many people outside japan got to higher than 5th dan...)

Nice little documentary. It's a great thing to show friends and family when they're curious, but have never seen kendo.
The Korean subtitles were annoying though, and I still wonder why Voidsamurai didn't just paste the link in his first post.
Here it is yet again for those that still haven't figured out all you have to do is click and download....

Great video!! :D I wish I knew how to play it on my DVD player I made a VCD but it does not work :(. It also seemed strange that there was not one Bokken in the video. Maybe it just isn't useful. It was also strange to see a Nito kenshi taking the grade with the older Sensei I heard even Musashi did not use two swords when he was doing really serious bouts. And it was strange that the 70+ year old man took his grading about 20 times or more and failed where as the younger man passed on his 5 I think. That must be annoying :D.
I wonder if any western kendo-ka will get 8th dan...

I wrote an email to national geographic and they don't have it on sale ( no surprise). But they said they will keep my details on file and will look into it. I also asked for special request, but they don't do that.
Here is the email to the National geographic video department, i suggest u all should send an email for the dvd to be produced. More emails they get the more likely they will consider.

Miyamoto Sensi strengthens my belief that the more stable training you have earlier, the better your chances are. His example is prime that old habits die hard, but if you dont succeed, try try again.
I see more and more of the philosophy that the quote "it is not practice that makes perfect, but perfect practice that makes excellence" come true. It is that which I admire about these Kendoists.
