View Full Version : SCKF team tournament old vs new

Here we go again!
Its team tournament season, but this year is a little different. The normal Gardena team shiai has been combined with the second half of the sckf championships. Personally I like the old set up. 5 person kyu,
3 womans, and 3 dans. This years tournament will feature 2 kyu 3 person teams (per dojo), I don’t know about the woman’s team, and 5 person dan team. I like only having a 3 person team for dan because it takes more skill to win. Some of the dojo’s in the sckf have two people that went to the WKC or the have people who are former team usa members. This makes for an awesome HIGH LEVEL team shiai!! 5 person kyu on the other hand is good! It allows the younger 7-10 year olds a chance to be on the team as sempo. But now the kyu team is 3 people, which means a lot of 1 kyus participating in a debana kote fest!

Which format do you like better??
What other kinds of team tournaments are out there?
If you are in the tournament, how well do you think your team will do?

After the job done on me in the last taikai, there will be no kote from me. The "new" shimpan out look is kyu can only score a point with a men. I will be on the Sho Tokyo kyu team. How will we do.....not sure. I'm out for revenge personaly. I will win my match. I hope my team mates are as serious as I am. If they are we have as much a chance as anyone. :cross_eye

Hiya,

The "new" outlook is kyu grades can only score with men? Not excepting the other commonly used scoring locations (kote and do) seems a little harsh. Anyway, I think the three person kyu teams will be fun. The smaller teams also seems like it will be quicker and leave more time for the yudansha matches. It just means we need to work on getting clean points and work a bit harder for each point, as well as work together to win.

Besides a clean men ippon looks really, really nice.

Maybe I should clarify my statement a little.
The "new outlook" is not official. Just that the shimpan seem very reluctant to give points for kote in the kyu divisions. I seems funny that in 5+ matches I watched in the last taikai there were no points given for kote. Every point was for men. Since I'm 6 ft tall most kenshi I fight are smaller than me. Because of this they tend to protect their men more. I have compensated for this by practicing kote, ALOT. I have done fairly well in taikai's this year and then all of a sudden I can't get a point on kote. Neither can anyone else. Just makes me wonder. :cross_eye

I like the new look of the tournament. I practice at a university club, so recently we've had a lot of adult kyu's coming into the club, so meeting all the age requirements wasnt so easy in the past. We had a shortage of younger kids to fill in the other positions, but an abundance of adult kyus. This time around we have plenty of room for our kyu competitors which I like. Tournament fun for everyone!

Anyway, I think my team and I will do well. The other 2 members of my team have been putting on very good performances at the last couple taikai's. I've been out of practice for a lil while unfortunately due to vacation and lack of a car/license(hopefully fixing that soon though).

My favourite team-setup is 3 person team, where at least 1 has to be kyu-grade...that and what we used to do at my old dojo in London, (at our annual internal taikai), 3 person team, where the teams are picked randomly :).

It doesn't matter to me what the set up we have. Although the 5 person team does give us a better chance at being competitive.

Unfortunately, SCKF rules is going to keep me out of this tourney. But, I'll be ready for the next one

Go JCI!

Apparently the judges didn't like the creativity on my part, thus the hansoku. but I had a lot of fun. and hey we only lost to PCI by 1 point...not bad for a team with 2 kyu members in the yudansha division. Honda-san stopped the slide mid-shuffle. GO VENICE!

Congrats to the boys from Venice. Wish I could have had some of the fun in the Yudansha division. Overall good taikai. Still think we need to send some of our shimpan to Japan for vacation to learn what their doing. Not really happy with how I played, but I'll take third. :cross_eye

Okay it's time to set the record straight. The now famous hand-nuki-waza is really called the Kote-noh-shinai waza while it is the perfect technique to use to get your opponents shinai out of your throat aparently it is not recognized as a valid technique with many of the shinpan. The Zatoichi waza (or long-tanto-waza) is really a modified reverse handed upper gedan-noh-kamae, specifically developed for those who can't seem to hold on to their shinai when over matched by supperior opponents but obviously to dense to realize it. As far as the your-Shinai-is-a-toothpick-to-me waza, this should only be used when all else fails, your match is slipping away and your reduced to trying to intimidate your opponents, or if your just plain getting tired of them poking you in the chest. :beard:

Hello, I saw most of the adult kyu matches and saw some kotes being scored. I believe they were looking for more kime this time round.

Good point KF, however if you saw my match in the championship bracket you'd know the only Kime i was doing was on my opponents Mono-uchi. Slick-huh? :beard:
