Okay, I decide to be brave. This is my nidan test at AUSKF summer camp this year. I am the one on the left hand side. Thank God I have passed test. This is almost first time in 6 month that I am watching my own Kendo. Damn, I really stiff and suck..

Any kind of recommendation would be helpful. What do I have to do to pass Sandan test ? Follow thru? More seme ? Relax ? My Kata also suck too.. Sanbonmae, I was pointing head instead of between eyebrowse. Yonbonmae, I screwed up in the beginning..

Any kind of critic helps !!

Congratulation!

Ok I will play the game and give my personnal comments.

I think the test is very good. I especialy think you have a good men motion. Especialy at the beginning of the men the momentum is good, but as you mentionned: sometimes when you attack you stop after the hit and stay in front of your opponent. But I think a lot of korean kendo player do that too. So I guess maybe there is a question of style too. But when i'm thinking in terms of the kind of kendo I'm trying to achieve I would try to have an impact with the opponent then maybe stay close to them, deviate diagonaly, or just going plain foward etc. I also have the tendency to raise my arms very high just after I hit and I believe I need to change that.

I think you should change a little bit the way you do your kote. Your feets are behind the movement of your hands so it looks a bit ackward. You make a big swing for kote so the impact is good, but I think you should try to enter a bit more with your feets before going for kote.
Since your hands are going first you give an indication of what you are doing. Your attack all comes from your hands coming up then down. If your feets would enter before your hands I think you could have a great men and kote seme combo. You could make believe the oponent you would go for kote by pusshing down then you go up to the men or vice versa.

hmm I hope you understand what i'm trying to say...I cant express myself.

Oh and my 3rd dan shinsa video is on youtube too. Its not very good, but I passed..

Great, very good advise and I agree with you all !! I also noticed that I cannot follow thru when I compete against bigger guys, and most of them are bigger than me:confused2. When I doing shinsa, I think I did well but when I see myself on video, yuuuuuuuuuuuuucccckkkkkk....

You are doing a bit too many kotes. Remember, kote only disables... men kills. Doing kote, you are breaking your posture quite a bit afterwards... either by turn your body or losing the center with your shinai. Your men is a bit weak as well. Need better follow through and more of a crisp hit. Your raise your arms too high afterwards which may be ok if you are going to turn completely and back out.

Plus as nidan, you need to try some nidan waza.

Wow. Your test gives me much hope for passing my ni-dan test. Your kendo is very good, but you did almost exclusively men-uchi and kote-uchi without ni-dan waza or any oji-waza (that I noticed). I thought both were requirements of the ni-dan test. Congratulations!

Thanks Rularn and Black Knight..

I was told different thing about nidan waza. Oji Waza is not necessary for Nidan test. They are still looking for good clean men. If you can execute nice Kote-men, you will definitely pass. But it is all matter of if you can execute clean Kote-men. I just played safe.... :ponder::ponder:. Meaning, I have to practice more Kote-men since I am not confident with my nidan waza....

Thanks for your good advise..

I think that you were quite nervous, said that, you´re a bit heavy on your feet, I think you should try to be more agile there, and use your feet and body to hit, not just your arms as it was pointed out. other than that, nice debana men :D

If you can execute nice Kote-men, you will definitely pass.As with most things kendo, it's not black and white. As I told you in PM, I would have liked to see more variety of waza in your grading, and if someone asks me what are the differences between shodan and nidan, variety of waza is one of the differences. However, if a candidate shows good sense of opportunity and executes for some nice points, as you did, then we tend to say "good enough". Showing that you can score nice points on other candidates of the same level is always, always good.

Och, I had a question about the importance of showing a load of waza over timing and opportunity/Ken-Tai-Ichi. But then thought.... I passed on the second already so what does it matter :)

Och, I had a question about the importance of showing a load of waza over timing and opportunity/Ken-Tai-Ichi. But then thought.... I passed on the second already so what does it matter :)I should qualify that, "mainly on the second", I did do waza, just not tons. I mainly used seme, kote-men, kote and men and debana. I did one good firm oji-waza. I may have done a harai waza as well.

You know what? I was also wondering about this. You only have 2 min. I was debating if I should show them a whole bunch of waza, including oji and harai & hiki & nidan waza ? Those are the wazas that are very hard to show with good form. I am sure I can execute them but I was worry that I might look ugly. So I have decide to show my basic skill and minimize other waza. How important is to show whole bunch of waza during shinsa???
