I have 2 questions. In most sword arts Hakama are worn on the legs, but didn't samurai horsemen wear seperated short pants? What were these called? And my second question is, where could I buy a pair of these?

According to this article, http://www.shindai.com/articles/hakama.htm , they are called...hakama. Wow.
As for where to buy one, cant help you there.
So what do you need one for?

Hmm... I didn't know they were also called Hakama... I thought the tight pants kind that only come slightly below the knee had a different name...but I forget.

Tight pants? The tight, (usually)white short-pants are called suteteko, if that is what you are talking about. If you mean the kind of billowy shot-pants that come to about knee height; those are also called hakama. They are just a different style.

I believe you are looking for nobakama - Field Hakama that can be worn when riding or when wearing armour. They aren't as flared as normal hakama and tend to be quite comfortable. Modern day nobakama have a zipper at the crotch.
The Dohyo cleaners at Sumo tournaments wear them during big events.

Now that is a brilliant insight! :) I've lost count of the number of times I've had to do my business in a hurry only to find my hakama to be an incredible hindrance!

silverleaf>> i think there is a thread around kwf about the tactics of 'going to the WC facilities without taking your hakama off', which might proof useful to you. no, i'm not going to dig into the details now :D
kiyoshi >> i dont know much about the topic, but wouldnt the hakama we use look just like that if we wrap it around the shin area? as they do in naginata, their wrapped hakamas look like that sort of.
