View Full Version : Perhaps a rather odd question . . .

Should one be able to close their jaws easily with men on? I've noticed that trying to actually bite my teeth together requires some effort and generally moves my men slightly and begins to cause discomfort if done too often and even starts to loosen the men.

Am I doing something wrong? It just seems like a weird thing to bring up and ask sensei.

Keep your tongue out from between your teeth till you get it fixed, and yes, show your sensei the problem.

Don't wait to ask your sensei. Bad men position can be dangerous for your jaws in case of hard contact.

You should be able to talk whilst in men.

I've tied mine a bit too tight on occasion and pretty much closed my mouth, which stopped me from yapping!

Can't close your jaw.... that's weird. At least to me, but i've only ever had the one men. And no, not in a gay way... haven't had several either before you jump in. :p

Not at all. This is exactly the kind of thing you should discuss with your sensei and/or sempai. Make sure you're not tying your men himo too low. The knot at the back of the head should be at the same height as your eyes, NOT at the top of the neck, as many beginners are inclined to do. Tying the men himo knot at the level of the eyes creates a bit of space for the sides of your face, including your ears.

Sensei was a bit perplexed even but gave me a couple suggestions (posture when putting on men, location of men him knot as you said Halcyon). We had someone new show up so we actually didn't get to training with men and kote on, but when I got home I started toying around with things. Looks like the knot was simply too low and after a little bit of work in front of the mirror I got things under control.

Thanks for the responses ^_^
