Does anyone have any advice for a nagging groin pull that Ive had for going on a month and a half now? It seems to be slowly....very slowly getting better. I have already tried laying off Kendo for 2 weeks and that didnt take care of it. Any advise besides just staying off Kendo for a longer period of time? I would rather avoid doing this as I have three tournaments coming up in Nov. and I need all the practice I can get. Any help would be much appreciated.

I pulled my groin during warm ups (of all things) in May and it still bothers me sometimes. I put Tiger balm or one of those Icey Hot patches on when I would sleep at night. Of course the best thing to do is just take it easy. I didn't stop keiko I just took it slow for a while.

My advice is to take it easy and slowly stretch it, but not so that it's painful. Another thing that might help is putting some heat on it before practice to relax the muscle and tendon. After practice if it starts to swell, put some ice on it for about twenty minutes. Same thing with the heat, it shouldn't be on there longer than twenty minutes. If you need to, you can even get a groin wrap for practices to prevent further injury. It's been a while since I did any sports medicine, but that's everything I can recall.

I cut this from www.webmd.com. There was a lot of stuff about Dominik Hasek's groin injury (which was extreme) in the article so I cut a lot out.

TREATMENT

The treatment for a torn groin is simple: rest and restricted activity. During this time, the patient is on crutches and has a long and painful recovery. As symptoms subside, the patient can begin general stretching exercises, and as the muscle heals, he can increase the stretching. When flexibility and strength reach normal levels, he can begin training.

...

RECOVERY

Recovery is long and difficult for the athletes. Hasek is expected to be out for a few months. Immediately after the injury, and for a few weeks following, he was treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, ice, and rest. He will be re-evaluated after he begins rehabilitation and exercise to get a more precise picture of when he may return.

LONG-TERM OUTLOOK

Goalies who have experienced this type of injury have generally not recovered well. Ron Hextall, a former Philadelphia Flyers goalkeeper, tore his groin and missed almost all of three seasons. After that, he continued to experience other groin problems throughout the rest of his career.

I had what I would describe as a mid-level groin pull. More than a tweak, but not a full blown and bruised tear.

I did some research at the time and came up with the same results as the previous posters. It is a slow healing injury and unfortunately the best thing you can do for it is to lay off it for awhile, mine took almost three months to completely heal.

What I did after one month of resting the area (minimal physical activity) was a lot of slow stretching. Nothing harsh but enough to get the area warmed up. Massage, cold packs and Alleve also seemed to help.

One thing I looked into, but never followed through on were compression shorts. I read a couple of articles online that suggested that the shorts may assist in keeping the area warm and supported. It may be worth a shot.

Good luck to you.

Hongs - I dont know if you remember me or not. I think I sparred against you in one of my first tournies. You beat me by one point (1-0). Anyways, hopefully we can have the rematch at one of the tournies below.

To get to your ?, I believe SCKF is invited to at least two.

The three I am talking about are the Texas Longhorn Invitational on the 8th I believe, the Oxnard ( I believe it is Oxnard or somewhere just north of L.A.) tournament in the middle of the month, and the SCKO tournament on the 23rd or 28th. I cant remember exactly.

Anyways, thanks all for your comment. This pulled groin thing sucks. Its more of an annoying injury than a painful one and it only seems to affect me in the first 30 minutes of practice. After I am adequately warmed up it becomes more tolerable. But it defineitely inhibits my Kendo.

I remember. I got a kote-men. Was a good match. Your seme was very good. I just got a quick point and held on.
The Oxnard team taikai has been cancelled. The Sensei is sick and they have a very small dojo, so they don't have enough people to run the taikai. I live in Camarillo, right next to Oxnard. It's 57 miles north of Little Tokyo, downtown LA.
Be very carefull with the groin. I had many pulled groins in highschool from soccer. Basically was one bad one that was never allowed to heal properly till I quit soccer. NOT fun. Good luck in the tournaments. :cross_eye

When I was heavily involved in western fencing I got a hamstring pull that took over a year to heal, and finally it got better after I knocked off lunging for 6 months. Proper warm and compression shorts (I still wear them under my hakama) are a great idea.

Be careful with Tiger Balm or BenGay in the groin area. If it creeps to close to the "tender" parts you will be VERY unhappy.
