I apologize in advance for the to the Western women of this forum for the use of the word "Housewife." However there apparently is a division in Japan which has exactly this moniker with respect to Kendo.

My Japanese wife bets none of those competitors suffer from spousal abuse. If their hubbies got out of hand they could always start a "Widow Division Championship".

Its actually one of the leading shiai sponsored by the ZNKR and takes place every year in the Nippon Budokan. Age ranges of the competitors varies widley... one of my friends (who is in her 50s) was selected for the Osaka team last year.
And its as the title says - you have to be a "housewife".....

Fuji sensei
she is 6th dan, but still...
she is SO SWEET i love to pactice with her (when i got th chance) she hits hard and pushes you harder but at the end of the day she always come with a smile and says "well done" like if you where one of her kids hahaha
besides she always supports you when you do something right instead of killing you when you make a mistake (as most of the japanese guys i know does) and she is so respectfull, kind, polite and humble when she teaches you on when yo make mistakees and she corrects you.
besides, in shiai she can kick or butts with one hand and her eyes colsed
yo keep on of her tenugi?? i try to use the one she gave me as much as i can, im sure that she gave it to me to be used instead of been kept as a suvenir...

Give me her full name (pref in Kanji) and the prefecture (Tokyo) and we can probably find out. If its far into the past it might require some digging though.

Just so you are aware....being called a housewife is not politically incorrect. There are some second-wave feminists who don't think that women should pursue housewifery as a career, and almost all women are likely insulted by the notion that housewifery is the only suitable career for them, but women who stay home and take care of the house and kids are called housewives. Modern feminists generally don't have a problem with housewives at all, because today becoming a housewife is more like a career choice than some anatomical obligation...however they would take great offense to this (note that I am not trying to come down on anybody, just trying to explain a little bit of what women are thinking, and where the frustration with sentiments like this comes from):
Is 'housewife' considered derogatory now? I thought it was a polite way of saying unemployed...
Being a housewife is NOT the same as being unemployed. It is a demanding, required job that keeps our society running. In today's west, there are many households in which the job of the housewife is split between the husband, wife, and children because the wife chooses to have a career besides housewifery. The role of the housewife has also become increasingly relegated to the government and community as a whole because it is so essential to our existence. Women have found other roles in society, and have accomplished much in those roles, but it hasn't decreased the need for the duties of the traditional housewife...we have just decided that it doesn't have to be solely a women's job.
On a related note, I have to say that I feel a little bit sorry for men. Because of the requisite aggression expressed in the original and second-wave feminist movements, you guys just always seem like you are walking on eggshells when it comes to women, afraid of saying something hurtful or insulting (see quotes above for ex). I just want to say thanks for your efforts! We women do appreciate it...and even when you feel like you might be getting it wrong, keep trying.

This is the way it is in our family. We sat down and made the choices together on who would do what, who would stay home, who would work outside the home, etc..
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
I've seen my wife's job.
I've done my wife's job.
Me no WANT my wife's job...!

Gotta be over 20, married, and not in full time employment. Many many young women in Japan dont have full-time jobs, just part-time or temp jobs, so these people might be able to qualify (im not sure). If you are widowed/divorced then youre out by the looks of it.
I dont think Osaka has a yosen (preliminary) shiai to determine the members (but I could be wrong), so they would be chosen based on application or shiai success.
From each prefecture a 5-woman team is selected and the teams then fight it out in the Nippon Budokan ever year. The first round is a 3 team league, then after that its a normal tournament.
Its sponsored by the Nippon Budokan and the Yomiuri Shinbun.
