hi all, after just recieving my Bogu this week, and having to visit the pub afterwards looking like a dearanged smurf, what with my hair sticking up and blue all over me, i wondered if there is any way to "lessen" the amount of blue that will come out next week. or is it just going to be a case of wait it out (or sweat it out as the case may be)

thanks in advance.

Soak it in cold water. You're supposed to do this before you wear it.

Check out some textile sites for hints and tips.

Your supposed to soak your Bogu in cold water? Or are we talking about Kendogi and hakama?

bogu themselves shouldn't bleed.. it's the himo that's going to bleed, but since you have the gi and hakama on, it shouldn't be a problem.. unless you do kendo naked.. even then unless you go to the pub naked, they won't see the cross mark of blue lines on your back.

I found that when my bogu was brand spanking new, I would have some slight staining on the face and ears from the padding in the men and on the hands from my kote, this only lasted the first few trainings, but it was there.

Cold water with plenty of salt (half a glass of salt per one water bucket) usually works for me for new stuff, but it won't get rid of the problem entirely, a few training sessions usually do the trick.

yupe, you are right. i totally forgot about the men. they will turn your head sligtly blue, along with your hands for handling them, and himo.

Didn't you have a shower after training? Dye from hakama, bogu etc gets everywhere, but that's also why it's easy to wash off.

hi all

hi back at ya. I was actually hoping this was a massive post of your Sensei's favorite rude jokes. I'm surprised it's a question of your own but well done.

Some guy had dye coming off his new bogu the other week. The more you practice, the older it gets, the less is stains. You will just have to put up with it or wash immediately after practice before going to the pub.

Strangely enough 'smurf' is the common phrase used in many posts about too much dye. There's plenty of threads, via the search, which will give you both reasons to 'set the dye' or 'not'. The use of 'salt water' or 'diluted vinegar'. There's so much on this message board that is actually useful, factual information, not just opinion. I don't know what I did before it.

I agree with Martch, try having a shower... That worked for me when I got my bogu.
On a side note, it's quite disgusting not to wash before going out...

Unless of course you want to set scent indicators for about ten feet around you, to avoid unwanted conversation :)

True... I know other ways to avoid unwanted conversation, though, and I absolutely need the after-keiko-shower. :)

Very nice! :D

The only way I can think of that your hair can get blue is if you wouldn't have used a tengui.

I have never seen someone not using a tengui.

Then about the not showering after keiko, it's gross.

If you're planning to go out and have a drink then atleast have a shower.

Just my opinion.

With a new men you have two choices for the color of your ears... Blue or Red... (A new Men hurts so much for the few Days/Months...)

The best way to set any fabric dye is with white vinegar. Throw your Hakama and Gi in a five gallon bucket and add about 6-10 cups of pure vinegar to the water and let it sit for a few hours. Then rinse and wash. You will still have some bleeding occur but it will reduce quite a bit after the vinegar...remember to wash after the vinegar!
