silly question i know, but there must be some pthers who dont know what it is? maybe?

to me it looks like ko (ancient) and budo (ways?), so is it using "more ancient" wepons than a katana? (seems unlikely) or is it different wepons like the sickle and chain and other such stuff?

yes i could google it, but i thought a discusiion of sorts would be more interesting.

Kobudo = koryu (= kobujutsu).

It can also refer to traditional Ryukyu fighting systems (traditional karate).

My Naginata sensei does ryukyu kobudo. From what I saw it's mostly weapon kata and waza drills. No free sparring. I saw them use nunchaku, sai, bo, and gruesome tekos(sp).

I saw them use...gruesome tekos(sp).

You mean those crispy shells filled with a meat-like substance, shredded lettuce and processed cheese? Yeah, they're pretty gruesome...especially when you buy them from Teko Bell...:gasmask:

Sorry for the thread drift, I just couldn't resist...

Kobudo = koryu (= kobujutsu).
Koryu basically refers to any pre-Meiji (1868) budo/bujutsu system - leading some to argue that technically Kendo should be included in this category.

It can also refer to traditional Ryukyu fighting systems (traditional karate).
Particularly weapons systems.

Kudos to Oroshi.

We do tendo-ryu naginata at our dojo, and my sensei does (but doesn't teach us) nakanishi-ha itto ryu. No sparring definitely - you'd get killed doing the stuff they do in kata.

Hell, you'd get killed in kendo kata doing the wrong stuff, potentially. Bad thoughts move towards what would happen in the third form if shidachi didn't back up and parry when they're supposed to.

And as someone said, koryu is the traditional schools that lie before the gendai budo chronologically. I hadn't heard of the argument for kendo being a
koryu before, though. Very interesting.
