I expect to keep about the same divisions as last year: 9/10 & under,11-12, 13-15, 16-18 kyu, 16-18 dan, 1-2 dan, 3-4 dan, 5 dan and up, women kyu, women dan, jr. team 15 & Un, sr team 16 & up. Subject to slight variation based on entry. I think last year there were so many sandans they had their own division and the upper group was 4 D & up. Probably be around 24 teams entered in the senior group.

Obento ...You have a choice of either chicken/beef combo or fish (teriyaki salmon/saba shioyaki) with nishimae, tsukemono, gohan, etc. + a drink
If you e-mail me with your groups choices in the next week you can pick. Default for no pick is the chicken/beef combo.

Money Received, your good to go.
Keiko on Friday night, closest to the taikai is Bellevue, where are you staying? If you are at the Silver Cloud we can arrange rides for those who want to go.
Normal practice for Bellevue is Round Table pizza but crowd gets pretty sparse the night before the PNKF. Maybe the Hawaii guys will want to go too.
It is pretty easy to get to downtown from Renton. The place where they throw the fish around is Pike Place Market. Space Needle is a great view if the weather is good, bring a good coat. It is starting to get into the 50's during the day and 40's at night.
There will definately be folks heading out after the shiai. Best talk to the 20 somethings they now the "hot" places.

JMarsten,
Why won't you let the So Cal take the Perpetual Trophy? The team made proper arrangements to transport that thing you call a trophy and yet you tell them,"The Trophy does not leave the state of Washington!!!". What kind of crap is that? Anyone in California would take better care of a Perpetual Trophy over anyone in Washington simply because we as Californians have won more Perpetual Trophys than any other state in the US. If you do not want the trophy to leave the state of Washington, why invite other states and even countries to your tournament? This clearly shows you are a poor sport, have no honor, and a thief! You ripped off So Cal of airfare, hotel, car rental, and their time. Renton is no vacation spot. But So Cal will be back next year and we will roll deeper!! See ya next year THIEF!
Curtis
14-11-2003, 03:34 AM
Dear Yellow-Bruddah,
Let me address your misdirected cowardly ire and use of a blatantly racist moniker. First J. Marsten Sensei was a co-chair for the tournament. The decision to let the perpetual trophy go to California is not solely his. The trophy because of its age and poor condition is not given out to anyone to take home. The winning team gets to take a picture with it. Second is that you were never told you could take the trophy. For all you knew we did not even have perpetual trophy.
Now lets look at the SoCal team. The tournament is for dojo team, not federation. Yet despite this they were allowed to enter a federation team even though there was three people from the same dojo and they did not use that third person. Even with a federation team SoCal only managed a one-point win in the final. And if I am not mistaken some were on the US team. Contrast this with the fact that when we came to California we were not allowed to compete in the team division. Instead we were placed in a special goodwill team division. Do you still want to talk about good sportsmanship?
Lastly your hiding behind a racist moniker and addressing a nanadan as a thief is as I said an act of cowardice. Grow up and act like a person of character.

We used everyone from my dojo. Infact I was the third guy from my dojo. And they told us to have an alt. team member but not let us use him? and don't even have an trophy for him? I was disapointed in that. I was hoping next time we go there everyone(not just southern cal) on the winner teams will get something.

Yup! We will be there! And thinking of taking something back home too! Moocow and I have been in the finals for over 2 years in the same braket now. We will see who could get the 1st place this time. Woah, who's the dude who said all that? That was un-called for. Don't make all of our SoCal people look bad. I apologize Marsten-Sensei. That was an old perpetual trophy that had A LOT of history behind it. I wouldn't risk it being damaged or lost. Anyways, yeah it was a fun tournament, even though I decided to be in the team tournament only. Well... team tournaments are always fun. Yeah the last match against Bellevue was tough. And I had to go against, in my opinion, the strongest woman kenshi in America, Barr-Sensei! I was happy to see familiar faces I hadn't seen in a loooooong time like David from Bellevue and Yumiko. It was also enjoyable to see all of us use our special waza like "bunny men" and "tengoku men." I was especially pleased that two of my secondary kamae finally worked. My "Nakauchi Sensei 'I DARE YOU!' kamae" which I will now call my "Matrix Kamae", and my "House Kamae" which will now be called "THE HOUSE OF PAIN!!! Kamae" scored me some ippon. AAAND I finally got to go against another nito kenshi. That was fun. Met Ms. Dorkusmaximus. Hurray. I just want to congratulate the PNKF for running an exceptional tournament that also ran extremely efficiently. We were in and we were out. Of course we would have been out sooner if a certain incident did not happen. Marsten-Sensei is well aware of this. Hahah. "ARA-KAKI!"

Dear Tenken,
My mistake, I see that you did have three on the team.
Your expection that there would be a trophy for the alternate comes from I don't know where. We have never given trophies for alternates and will continue to do so.
We do not tell you to have an alternate. We have you list them in the event you have to replace someone. Teams can enter with only three people. Clearly you are not familiar with the way our tournament is conducted. The tournament has been run this way for many years.
On a positive note it was nice to have you attend and add to the tournament.
This still does not excuse the attack mounted against us by one of your members. It is really uncalled for.

C. Marsten,
You do have a point regarding the So Cal Team. Knowing some did represent the US Team and true this is a dojo event, perhaps they should not have been allowed to enter as a team. But since they were allowed to enter as a team, there is no foul play regarding sportsmanship on their part. When you came to California that was a decision made by whichever Tournament coordinator that you came to. Maybe you guys might consider the same.

MAn whats going on? The team we had was mixed, but i think that if we had that same team in the SCKF championships, i dont think we would win. team tournaments are not about having the best guys/ladies, its about who plays smart...or gets lucky =) mr. inouye, french and myself are not even the strongest guys at our dojos...so I dont know if you could say we had an unfair advantage. I for one think that we got pretty lucky, the other dojos were all pretty strong and they should be proud that they almost beat us(many dojo's tested us that day!). I just want to say thanks for having us, the trophy was wobbley and scary( the kendo guy on top was kool), but only the fun that we had at the tournament matters and i had lots of fun!

I am not questioning the sportsmanship of the team. Never was. It was an exciting match to watch and judge. And as pointed out by Tenken I was mistaken about the 3 members. Take the time to read carefully.
You brought up sportsmanship with your uncalled for attack. This is really a poor display of judgement.

I am really sorry to see this traffic over a couple of trophies. I guess one lesson is you are learning what it is like to travel outside your usual and acustom places. I am not sure why Tenken had the expectation of throphies for alternates since SCKF goes to Steveston every year and they only give out 1st & 2nd Place (5ea) and the entry as in normal tournaments provides space for an alternate. Perhaps just being on the player end and not having experience in setting up, running et. al a tournament gives assumptions that are not necessarily valid when traveling outside of one's home turf.
I have no problem with the team entry, otherwise I would have rejected it. I really enjoyed the final match, it was very exciting since those are my students you were against. As a matter of fact, the junior champion team had two of my students on it. So I could hardly have issue with the SCK team since there were 3 Covina members on it.
The Japanese Consul General trohpy is 28 years old and that makes it older than the 4 of your 5 team members. We expect it to crumble at any time. To not get to take it to California is not unreasonable. We quit letting it travel several years ago since it is ready to fall apart. The last time a California team won it back in the late 70's or early 60's they didn't take it home.
In any case I sure got a chuckle out of Yellow Bruddah, the thought of him laying on the floor throwing a hissy fit really made my day.

I agree with you Sensei, but as for being one of our members, he is not . we don't know who this person is , but once found out a visit to this persons dojo will follow , certain people will throw some smackdown on this person , so for any misunderstandings and bad feelings we appolgize..
also as for being a Federation Team , hmmm i don't think we went as that , just a bunch of guys who wanted to go up and have fun, thats why we called ourselves just "So Cal" i'm sure if it was a federation Team , you would of seen probably the Yang brothers and others.. basically SCKF said no to even helping us out just a little but oh well ,
I had the most fun in the team matches, i went against my namesake ( Inouye ) from Youshinkan Dojo , nito v nito, what are the odds of that happening, hahahaa. seeing the kurukuru bunny men, moocows matrix wazas...so for next year I hope we get an invite to come back ..

Happy belated b-day, Ms.Kendo ^_^. Yeah the final team match was great. The women yudansha was really inspiring. I wished I could've saw all of the matches. By the way, how did you do?

Thanks for the reply! It is my very first, and I'm excited that my post was read by somebody! I thought I didn't do it properly!
Anyways, I didn't do very well in the renton tournament, but that is okay because that gives me more motivation to get ready for the Vancouver one! It will be great this year. Yamada-sensei will be coming and I will get lots of time to practice with him. He is a great sensei from Japan and has visited Seattle and Vancouver many times. For those who don't know of him, he is a former All Japan Kendo Championship Champion and was THE youngest man ever to get 8-dan in Japan a couple of years ago. Hint hint ** His kendo and teaching is AMAZING! Anyways, i'll post more information when I get it, but if you're thinking of coming to Vancouver, January is the month! We have lots of exciting things happening!!!

Much ado about nothing.
I don't know quite how to respond to this with out first apologising for the lack of respect shown to our gracious hosts in my home town.
This still does not excuse the attack mounted against us by one of your members. It is really uncalled for.
Honestly, though as the other members of our team pointed out this is not one of us, nor does this person represent the sentiment that is felt by the team.
Even before we learned that the trophy was not to be taken out of state we as a team had decided to leave it with the PNKF due to it's fragile nature and the risk of possible dammage. As for there not being a 6th trophy for the alternate (me) I was not at all suprised. I feel what you are seeing here is my very considerate fellow kenshi wanting to include a member who didn't get to participate due to the excellent abillity and health of his team mates. For this sentiment they should be commended not condemmed for this is exactly the kind of honor that kendo promotes.
Anyway as i said before Thank you for allowing us to participate in a tournament with such a rich history. I only hope that the invitation will be offered again. It's always nice to come home, even if it is only for the week end.:beard:
PS Marsten sensei, I think you did a demo at my high school back in '79 or '80. That was what originally started my interest in Kendo. It only took me 20 years to start practice.....better late than never eh?

haha well you did it right, ms. kendo. Man, I bet you're going to pumped up for the Vancouver taikai because you're going to train with a hachidan before that!!! I'm one envious kid =P. I was at the last Vancouver taikai and I didn't last for 10 seconds against Hayashi and Fukushima hahah. They whooped me so bad. It was fun though ^_^.

Dear Dorkusmaximus....if you faught Hayashi and Fukushima, it must meen you are female. That's great...I've found someone that I can relate to. I wonder who you are?!?! Because I am Hayashi and Fukushima is another girl from my dojo. There are two Hayashi's and two Fukushima's though...hehe (we have alot of women in our club.) Our senior team always consists of 4 girls and 1 guy. (don't worry, the guy never seems to get lonely ^^) Well, hope i can figure out who you are....but I guess not knowing is the whole point of this whole thing.........

I love the Vancouver dojo ^_^. Never been there but I love it already. I was rooting for the almost all-girl team at the University of Washington taikai. Very inspring to see =). Whoa! you're Hayashi and Fukushima?! J/k =P. Are you the younger sister? Haha I bet he's the happiest to be on the team =P. All the girls had their hair dyed that time back in April, right? That was so kewl ^_^.

Yeah, I love Vancouver Dojo too! It has the Hayashi, Fukushima and I'm not sure of this one, but the Akitaya women too right? Well there is one thing I don't like about that dojo. Hahahah, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about ms.kendo. And I want to practice with Yamada-sensei! Wish I could go up there in January, but moocow will be there in February for the Steveston Tournament. So I'll see you guys, dorkusmaximus and ms.kendo, in a few months. Gotta start training again....

Thanks for the encouragement guys...but I'm not the one kicking a$$, I'd have to say...that would be you!!!! I saw the picture you took after the taikai...I finally know who's who now. I can't believe you guys got zekken made with your nicknames...that's pretty crazy!! Anyways, I'm thinking of posting some WUSKG pics on this forum. Do you guys have any to add? I've been getting alot of e-mails from ppl all over the world eventhough the event was a while back...but there are still pics floating around from person to person. Coichi (Brazil) and Laurant (Hungary) sent me a couple...thought I should post them up somewhere so you guys can see them. I'll do that sometime in the next week...keep posted!!
By the way, moocow, kurukuru-san and tenken..I'm sure you guys will do really well in steveston...I'll for sure be there to watch and cheer you on!!! But don't watch my match though! I'll get way too nervous ~ :((: I wish I could fight with the guys..but at steveston women and men are seperate...ah well...that's life...anyways, talk to you all soon...look for those pics!
