I only started to shiai a little while ago (a month or two) and one of my sensei showed me roughly what jodan kamae looks and feels like. He didnt really show me any techniques or anything.
anyway I was just curious, what kind of situations would you use it in? I noticed one of the senior students seems to use it alot (hes about 4th dan). I dont plan to use it without instruction of course but I dont get all that much chance to observe it in action

You would use it in situations that you want to be a big fat showoff.

Jodan is a very aggressive style that suites an aggressive style of play. You leave yourself open to attack by the simple nature of the stance but you are ready to attack at a moments notice.
One of my sensei is a 3rd dan, hes pretty damn tall and big bloke and so uses his reach as an advantage with jodan. He uses the one armed (left) attacks alot, I have forgotten the name of them, which give him even more reach and is still quite fast and powerful.
He does not use it exclusively, just does it sometimes, I think he likes to play around with it and try new things sometimes. Always good fun to watch. Unfourtunately I have been told that Australia is lacking a sensei who teaches jodan-no-kamae.

I got lucky recently and my sensei started a jikeiko practice with me in jodan and eventually (after he got tired of hitting me) showed me some techniques but I'm not planning on using jodan myself for quite some time

This seems a big unfair. Joudan is about aggressiveness, domination, and simply put, crushing your opponent. It doesn't really have any blocks (the only one it has is actually a transition into chuudan), only a few debana that are of any use. You've got morote joudan, which is two hands - huge reach and strength, and katate joudan - requires a lot more strength, but can be fast and catch the opponent off guard. Regardless, joudan is tough and requires intense practice. You don't have to be a big meaty guy to do it, but it doesn't hurt.

You didn't look either fat or big in the WKC man, I hope you have at least fulfilled the 'bad' part somehow :cool2:
