View Full Version : New Guy Question About Stitching

Beginner here, and considering the purchase of new bogu.
I was looking at some of the specials e-bogu's running, and they mention a couple of bogu sets with "4/2mm" and "5/2.5mm" stitching. I've seen the comments on the board as to 2mm vs 5mm etc., but don't understand what these slashes mean in the description. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Maybe it's different for juniors and adults. It says something about it.
Have you asked the sales guys at ebogu?

They are mix match. Like you will get a 2.5 mm Men and Tare, 5 mm Kote and Do.

Most Korean bogu I've seen only has one stitch width, the advertised width. But in Japanese bogu that width is usually the widest stitching and actually in key places the stitching will be quite a bit tighter. I can't say for sure but I've always surmised that this is what the designation is referring to - a bogu with 4 mm stitching in some places and 2 mm in others.

What you are looking at is a "gunome" set...not a combination set of varying stitch pieces..
The overall stitching is 4 or 5 mm in most areas.
However, in the high wear areas such as the fold and edge of the mendare, sides of the tare and kote is 2 or 2.5mm. So the distance between the rows of stitching is closer; thus giving more reinforcement and support in high wear areas.

As neil said like for 4/2mm it means that for the part that has padding inside ( on top of Men and score part of kote), it will be 4mm stitch and the rest of bogu part are 2mm stitch. This usually apply on Japanese made bogu for 6 to 4 mm machine stitch bogu and apply from some korean manufacturer.

Hey there beginner. The 4/2mm means there are 4 places on your bogu where the padding is only 2mm thick. It's going to hurt when you get hit in those spots. It's the manufacturer's way of saying, "Hey cheapo, that's what you get for not spending more for our better quality bogu".

Hai-hai, why don't you just leave this bbs, as you are obviously not interested in either kendo, nor helping people out.

How exactly is this supposed to be funny or comedic?
Onegai shimasu.
Could you list the bogu you have owned? Brand, model, cost? What is your opinion? List bogu you've seen others own that were really nice or really bad.
I am a beginner and do not have bogu. I see a couple of companies out there but do not know what is good or bad. I do not want to waste money (especially since they cost hundreds of dollars) on something that has disappointed someone else already.
Arigato gozaimasu.
How is this supposed to help this person...especially because weren't you asking the same type of question a few months earlier?
Did you even make it to Bogu before Quitting?
Instead of being a goof, Why don't you help him and give him the right information?
Anyways....
tool119: I looked at the e-bogu site and took a look at the 4/2 and 5/2.5 sets...
I think the 4/2mm set would be worth the extra $50. Not only is the stitching tighter, but if you look closely at the pictures, the materials used seem to be a lot better. The reinforcement/trim material on the men (chin and mendare) and tare of the 5/2.5 set is synthetic material/leather. Whereas, the material on the edge of the men and tare on the 4/2 set looks to be dyed dear leather (call e-bogu to confirm this).
Also, the tare on the 4/2 set has 5 lines across the tare which will help to keep it more rigid after a few years of use, and offer (marginally) a little more protection against missed Do strikes.
hope this helps..

How exactly is this supposed to be funny or comedic? It's like there's these multiple answers before I posted mine. It's like my way of saying, hey, why are people giving the same or similar answers. Everyone else just couldn't let the first answer be sufficient enough. I'll just add mine.

Did you even make it to Bogu before Quitting? Nope, I had to leave town and there was no kendo where I am.
Instead of being a goof, Why don't you help him and give him the right information? Blah!!! Is tool119 unable to contact e-bogu for an answer? Is he that lazy that he can't pick up the phone and call them or even e-mail them before writing here? Oh yeah, he's lazy alright. It's not like e-bogu isn't out to help their customers? There's a far deeper problem and it starts with tool119 and his ulterior motive.

Well, his original question drew a reply from Matsuda sensei. And from his reply I finally learnt what the lines on the tare are for and why better tares have more lines than cheaper ones. So I learnt something. That's the point of a discussion forum. Sharing of knowledge through exchange of words.

Hai_hai why did you come back to the forums? It was so much nicer with out you here. You never contribute anything possitive... you don't even do kendo anymore. I can't figuire out why the moderators have not gotten rid of you yet. It's unfortunate that they have to babysit the forums because of people like you. Matsuda sensei is right, but as usual you feel the need to defend your ignorance. The purpose of these forums is for kendoka to help each other. Tool119 has done nothing inappropriate, unlike you who thinks this is a place to act like a jerk off. Do us all a favor and bugger off!
Sorry for feeding the troll....

Guys, take it easy on Hai_Hai. Everyone knows that he's just trying to be funny.
Tool119: Be careful ordering from E-Bogu.
I ordered the 12th WKC videos (because I wanted to see my clubmates fighting) and a size 32 shinai for my son. I selected EMS - which is three business days delivery, and found out later that they sent it Fedex Ground (7-10days). Included in my order also was a six-piece Suburi-To which turned out
to be out of stock. Of course, the website never mentioned this, and I never got a response from them via email. It is been over a month, and I still haven't received my Suburi Shinai. It was only when I cc'd Taro Ariga in my email that I got a response from them - namely that I should get the Shinai 'any day now' by EMS.
I got a really good deal on a 5 mm Machine set Mussyubou (anti-bacterial) from Moribudogu in Japan. He also upgraded my Mengane to IBB Titanium at no extra charge (other than the cost of the grille).

I like Hai Hai answer too. He is funny and without him, we don't have some humor in this forum. He coun't do Kendo anymore because of the moving but his heart is still with Kendo and that is why he is still going to this forum. Please don't be so difficult on him. Consider ourselves lucky since we still can do Kendo.

Funny?. His posts are usually either completly off on a tangent or insulting and have been from day 1.

Yeesh, I didn't realize that a simple question about bogu stitching in the Bogu forum would be such a bane in a person's existence....
Matsuda sensei, I see what you mean about the apparent differences between the 4/2 and 5/2.5 bogu sets. To be honest, if I were to order from e-Bogu, I'm a little torn between a special they're running for the 4/2mm set and their "top quality" 3mm set - a little bit of a price difference, but it seems (at least based on what I've read in earlier threads) that a little bit of cash can go a long way in longevity of your gear.
Ishidoro, thanks for the warning about e-Bogu, though I haven't had any problems thus far. Though, so far I've only had relatively small orders (a shinai, shinai bag, tsuba and a video). Thanks for the pointer to Moribudogu - a little expensive compared to the Korean stuff (but I understand that a lot of times you get what you pay for).
Either way, I probably won't order for another month or so - just trying to get as much info as possible from different sources. Thanks for the replies!
As for Hai-hai...dude, you got me. I'm totally busted. You are one investigative genius. What again is my "ulterior motive"? Have you ever heard of a "second opinion"? It usually makes the whole consumer experience that much more worthwhile - look into it.

Oh yeah...that's freakin' hilarious....In fact, it's the funniest thing I've heard all year...
You sir, are comedic genius...
