I know there was a discussion on something like this a while ago on the forum but i cant seem to find it agen.. nehow just wondering
if i am getting blisters slightly below my pinkie, ring and middle finger of my left hand (i dont mean right below where the fingers connect to the palm but say about 1 to 2 cm below that) does it mean i am holding the shinai incorrectly? or does it develop over repeated suburi's? i have been practicing abit..
i know most develop blisters around the joints of the fingers but not where i have them.. i also have a blister near the middle of my palm which is subsiding..
not a big deal just interested whether its a result of improper handling. Or does it have nothing to do with it. Thx for ne replies..

Those are all normal places to develop blisters, although the middle of your palm indicates that the tsuka is maybe moving around more than it should. Blisters (and eventually callouses) at the base of your fingers are good - it shows a grip where the tsuka is held in the fingers and not in the palm.

Hi k3nsh1n,
Blisters in the middle of your palm indicates that you are not holding your shinai properly. From experience, good blister and callus are those at the base of your last finger, i.e smallest one on your left hand. No blister should be found on the right hand as this is your guidance hand but true strength comes from the left. Get a sensei to correct your hand grip. It would help when doing one-handed suburi. Hope it helps

Callouses...
How about on your thumb?? I have it on my left hand, where the thumb bends nearest the thumbnail.
Is this a too relaxed..or too tight grip??
please help

it also depends on how much you practice and since how long. before coming to japan I maybe had only two or 3 blisters on my finger, but now I have about 7-8 (they are everywhere on my hands), even 2 small on the right hand. I guess also because I have been changing the way Im doing suburi a couple of times.
yet some people never have blisters

I have also found that a new shinai handle will cause you to be more prone to blisters than one that has had a bit of use. The one bad thing about blisters is that they never seem to heal because you want to go on practicising and training!
