View Full Version : odd shinai-tsukagawa mixing?

Eguchi offers some match ups with their Aun shinai that I don't really understand, was wondering if someone could explain it to me? You can order a size 39 Aun with a size 38 tsukagawa, and v.v. (a size 38 shinai with a size 39 tsukagawa).
I'm sheltered. I assume they're offered that way because people must want them that way on occasion, but was wondering why?
Thanks,
-Charles

for guys like me who like a shorter handle. i keep a closer grip than normal and dont want the gap between the right kote and tsuka. i get the 38 and fold it down once more.

It's just question of personal prefrence, some people prefer a longer then average tsukagawa others a shorter. We are all built diffrently. I personaly use a 38 tsukagawa on my 39 shinai because it give me a more comfortable hand position. What kind of waza you prefer also affects what kind of tsuka feels best.
Edit: T.Lee's speed typing-waza was too strong for me.

I'm thinking I should have a 38 tsukagawa but would feel cheated in not getting a 39 for the same price. Is that greediness, being a cheap ba$tard or a sensible attitude to value for money?

i just get whatever that comes with it. it makes things lot easier on my head. tho, i noticed that eguchi 39 tsukagawa seems bit longer than ebogu 39 tsukagawa.. i have no clue why that is.

If you do jodan, you might want a longer tsukagawa. I understand Chiba sensei uses an extra long custom tsukagawa. Quite expensive. So when he was a student, he used to stretch out a standard tsukagawa, according to my sensei who studied with him a bit.

It's not, it's more leather, therefore I'm getting more leather for the same price as a 38. Yeah... I'm cheap!

Other than the usual argument about waza and style preferences... i recently noticed that people are just in different sizes, period. For example, adult man uses 39 shinais whether you're 6'6" or 5'3".... obviously your preferred hand positions on a shinai would be different.
I never really thought about it that much about tsukagawa size until this summer, because i was missing doh's a lot for some reason.... Turned out it was because i was using a 39 tuskagawa instead of my usual 38... so the trajectory of my cut changed because my hand position changed....

Do you know how he stretched it? Iīve been looking for a longer tsukagawa but havenīt found one...

I use slightly too wide tsukagawas and then tie the tsuru fairly tight. This will stretch them out. Cheaper ones are the best :)
You'll also find that many of your dojo-mates will have old tsukagawas that are now too long for them.

I've heard that some people choose to use a 38 tsukagawa because of their body mechanics. At some point I remember being told that because everybody is built a little differently, some people may need a shorter/longer tsukagawa in order to aid proper grip and tenouchi. Has anyone else ever heard this?

Yep, our sensei has said if our hands are not correct in relation to the tsuba then we should be using a smaller one, or adapting the one we have so it's smaller.

don't you know the less cloth they use the more expensive it gets. Just look at underwear for women ...
