Lowly beginner seeking enlightenment please ...

Is it possible to have team shiai with both men and women? Or do shiai teams HAVE to be all-male or all-female?

In Western Australia we don't have very many women who practise kendo, and most of the shiai teams seem to be all-male - I'm just wondering if this is circumstance or a definite rule.

Thanks in advance!

Depends on the tournament, some allow mixed teams, some dont.

Exactly. And I don't see a reason why the teams shouldn't be mixed.

hey tanueirin,

yeah, it depends on the tournament itself but out of most of the tournament I've seen and went to (Australian University Games and state champs) the teams match are always mixed, the only exception was the national champs but that's because they had enough females to make up for a team.

Don't know why, but this thread reminds me on a report i once saw on TV. It was about a guy from some obscure country who was competing in Judo tournaments. He got his ass kicked quite often so he decided to take a "transsexual" surgery to become a woman.

He thought fighting as a woman he might be more victorious. So, after two years or so, he was a woman and accepted by the international judo federation. And, guess what happened.......he got his ass kicked by the women now....still lmao...

The question the reoprt doesn't answer was, what this guy / gal decided to do next. ;)

Thanks guys. It'll be a while before I go in tournaments but it's nice to know that I can take part in team shiai if I become good enough (fingers crossed).

good luck, it may be awhile to get into a full team shiai but the wait and the work will be well worth it.

You should be able to. I haven't heard of any tournaments in Norcal that didn't allow mixed teams. But of course each fed has their own rules and regs.

I found out the hard way in the NCKF champs that the team list you send in before the tournament has to be the final one. NO SUBSTITUTIONS allowed afterwards!! One of our players was away (for his wedding) and I went in. When we were bowing in for our first match, one of the opposing players noted that rule (that I didn't even know existed) and complained to the head judge. The head judge then confirmed that rule and I was "kicked out". So our team had only 4 kenshi. But we still got second place! Boo-ya!!!

As I understand, men can't get into women's team but women can get into any male team. However, I don't have any reference even though I have a proof. EUSKF team match had a prenty of ladies last we had a tournament.

Worlds' teams are strictly men and strictly ladies. Most other tournaments have just a single team division, which is mixed.

Hi Tanueirin,

great to hear another Aussie girl is playing kendo! Generally in Australia "open" team shiai allow both male and female competitors. At some tournaments, women's comps are organised (since there aren't that many of us!) to give us more chance to play other females. It's interesting how different it can be playing guys and girls.

At the Australian Kendo Champs, this is generally the format, though there is always the debate about whether this is 'fair' to the guys as we get a warm-up shiai before the open tournament and we get another chance to play...

Hope to meet you at a comp some-day!

cheers

Hi kohai,

I certainly hope to be competing as soon as my senpai thinks I'm ready (which will be quite a few months yet), but hey, kendo is a lifetime study, isn't it?

Let me know if you ever come over to Perth and vice versa - I'd love to check out your club if I'm ever in Sydney. I do envy you people in NSW and VIC being able to get more action, what with there being more clubs and people etc. Sigh, airfares from Perth to anywhere else in Australia = $$$$.

In Perth, as far as I know, there's me, Susan Bonar (who is fabulous and already my role model) and another girl from Singapore who trains at my dojo, so it's just us and lots of guys to bash (and be bashed by - in a controlled manner, of course ;)).

Great to meet you! Now that we've made each other's acquaintance, I hope that you don't mind if I pick your brain now and then for any kendo tips ...

Cya around :)

Oops. I should have said, there's me, AND Susan Bonar, AND a couple of other girls. Only in my dreams will I be as good as Susan!

For details on clubs and training, go to:
http://www.wakr.asn.au/wwwclubhost/wakr/clubs.htm

Due to Uni exams being on for the next two weeks (until roughly 23/11) the venue for Murdoch will be different and the venue and times for UWA will be different. Most clubs only take beginners at certain time of the year, so if you are one, keep that in mind.

You'll be able to get more info by contacting the people on the list. If you can't get through to them, PM me. Good luck in your kendo journey!
