I personally loved the book. 900 something pages was indeed a challenge for me. I just wanted to see if there were any other people who might have read it.

Yes, several years ago, ... it was a wonderful beach read.

The author should have included a disclaimer that any relationship between the characters in the book and historical persons (living or dead) was purely coincidental. Many liberties were taken, and many people confuse the events in the novel as being historical fact. For example, there is no historical evidence to corraborate the "meetings" of MM and the Zen priest Takuan.

On the other hand, I felt that the author attempted to capture the spirit of the times -- at least as seen as hindsight from the late 20th century perspective.

i also ready it a few years ago. At times i grew tired of Otsu and MM narrowly missing each other all the time but overall i enjoyed it.

Yeah i know.

And when Jotaro kept just missing him...that ticked me off.

I was kinda hoping Jo would be able to hook up with that girl though...

The NHK producer and Yoshikawa Eimei (Eiji's son) were also discussing how Musashi's love live should develop should they make a drama that portrayed his life afterwards.

I would have to agree with Raymond thats its high time these and other people started to make disclaimers. It all seems to have got mixed up as to where the fiction ends and the facts start.

Yes reality has escaped the story completely. People now believe (according to legend) that during the duel at Ganryu-jima he jumped ten meters in the air to avoid Kojiro's attack and then came down and crack his skull. The bug-eyed kabuki actor's (who plays Musashi on NHK) overly dramatic acting has died down a little and has made the show much easier to watch. I realized how strong Musashi fever was last night when I saw "Miyamoto Musashi PACHINKO". I am sure if the Japanese did not cremate their dead he would be rolling over in his grave.

Yes what with that and I hear that Sasaki was actualy drawing a his San-Jaku from over his shoulder. Must have arms longer than a monkey to be able to do that!

HA! I know, that one always puzzled me!

"Musashi fever" is finally dying down as less people watch the series, but at it's peak my favorite was how between trips to Hyogo-ken "Tatsuno Soba" was transformed into "Niten Ichi Ryu Soba!"

So shameless. It's amazing how quickly things go from hot to cold here. Literally 15 minutes of fame. Can't wait for the Nova Usagi and David Beckham to go down that path. :tired:

Oh no, the Nova Usagi...now I can't get that tune out of my head!

Fortunately, next year we will not be treated to a continuation of the NHK version of Miyamoto Musashi but the beginning of a new drama about the shinsengumi. I suppose we can look forward to a crop of "Tennen Rishin Ryu" products and such...

I liked the Nova Usagi! "Ippai kikete, ippai shabereru, etc...."

Now that the Musashi series is ending what's gonna come on to replace it? Hope its another good historical drama.... Sorry, but I'm a bit out of the loop now that I don't live in Japan.

From what I hear it is going to be about the Shinsengumi. Hope it's good.
