Welll...there you have it. I have been seriously considering getting my eyebrow pierced. One of the only downsides I can really see to it is it adversely affecting my Kendo!

Does anyone know the rules/regulations/etiquette involving piercings like this? Would it be okay for me to participate if I were to put a band-aid over the ring during practice? Will it be okay under the Men? I would just take it out but, you have to leave an eyebrow piercing in for 6-8 weeks until it heals before you can remove it for the first time. So, I was hoping I wouldn't have to sit out from Kendo for the next 8 weeks.

Anybody have any experience with this? :robot:

I don't think there are any regulations as far as piercing is concerned. i have my left eyebrow pierced and have no trouble putting my men on. I also ride a motorcycle and have had no problems putting on a full faced helmet. Besides the first couple of weeks, you should practice carefully trying not to irriatate the piercing.

I knew someone who had a pierced ear wearing a ring in it whilst doing keiko.
A stray shinai when under his men wing and ripped open his ear.

I don't know of any rules about piercing, but have been told be a few different sensei it is considered impolite to leave them in during practice. Maybe for saftey as stated above. I belive it is considered jewelry. I have heard stories of people failing exams for wearing jewelry. :cross_eye

It's been a general rule with any dojo and art I have been involved in: you take off jewelry (watches, necklace, piercings) when you enter the dojo to practice. I take eyebrow piercing out everytime I practice. It's really not a problem. Also it shouldn't take more than 4 weeks to heal fine as long as you clean it well. I suggest getting a bar put in after it has healed. They are much easier to put back in. Oh yeah! one more thing... do not put a bandaid over it while it's in the healing process. It may heal in a funny position.

So what I gather from this is, its probably not a good idea to wear my eyebrow ring during practice...and that I shouldn't do any Kendo till its able to be taken out. If its considered impolite...I'd feel very bad leaving it in for practice.

In that case I might not get one. *sigh*

I was about to give you some ideas and noticed you've made your decission. But anyway, in-case you are still interested....

As a female, it is common to have my ears pierced. I usually will apply baby oil to the wound. The main purpose of applying it is to keep the wound from getting wet or infected, which will eventually keeps the wound healing fast.

Thanks. I'm not totally sure yet. I still really want to get one...I'd just hate to miss out on Kendo for that long.

But the baby oil tip is appreciated.

Phorest,

I didn't mean to sound as if you shouldn't get one. If you want one by all means get one. I would just wear to class and if your sensei says something then explain to him your situation. Any reasonable man would give you a break.
The baby oil trick is interesting. I would have never thought of that, but it makes sense. That's what boxers do (vasalene).

Just tape it up and you should be fine.

Well....I went out and got it pierced! I just couldnt stand it anymore.

So...I'll talk to my sensei and see what she says about it. Hopefully I can still practice.

Put a Band Aid over it and noone will notice. A non-issue if your ask me.

Let me make this very clear... *DO NOT* tape it down, put a Band-aid over it, or do anything that would put it in an unnatural position. If you do that while it is healing it will develope scar tissue while it is in that position, and it will stay that way. I have seen people with eyebrow rings that are plastered sideways on their face because they covered it with a band-aid for work. It looks really stupid.

It looks really stupid.
And this is distinguishable from the way an eyebrow ring looks normally exactly how?

working with metal chippings flying everywhere when I was in a machine shop always makes me think this eyebrow thing is a bit weird.... I always wore glasses to stop that type of thing happening! I could have had one of those rings for thirty years! Typical, always just miss out on starting a new fashion....
I make all my students take out their metalwork, I've seen too many accidents with rings and things in MA in general.

Wherever it is you got pierced, take the ring or stud off and put a band aid or tape over it. Then take the bandaid off after practice and put your ring or stud back in. Your kendo equipment is also filled with many germs since you never really wash it. Take a shower and spray the pierced area with antiseptic after keiko so you don't get infected.

Hi!

Well, when it is still healing, you can't take the ring or stud out until it finishes healing, because it will close up, and thus, the piercing will be rendered useless. Phorest, what really works good to put on it, is Neosporin. That's what I used when I got my ears pierced long ago when I was a kid. It prevents infection and keeps the ring/stud from sticking to the skin. I agree... don't tape it.

I will always remove all my jewellery or strings while practising. But I agree with Kaoru that newly pierced wound should not be touched until it is fully healed.

Phorest, will it be a suggestion that you do not wear your 'men' for some time while practising kendo? Of course, this means that you can't have keiko or shiai as well, just plain basic training. That is what I do when I injured myself but at the same time still itchy for kendo... :silly:
