Ask your sensei. They'll tell you what kind to get and where they go to get theirs. You might even get a club discount.

Where you buy your items seems to be rather individual in our club and I haven't seen any discounts on the uniform. I've seen it on shinai but not the uniform...

In our club we can purchase it through our sempai that handles orders. This usually has a discount or we can just purchase our own. There are tons of online dealers anyways.

As for when you get it, ask your sensei when you should purchase it.

I could just be wrong, and this is kinda off topic, but I was under the impression you couldn't test for kyu until you had bogu?

I don't know about other places but in South Africa you can grade up to 5th kyu before you need a bogu...

But hell, what do I know... :)

NCKF (Northern California Kendo Federation) requires shinsa-keiko as part of all gradings. So, yes, at least in NCKF you must have bogu to test for kyu grades.

Don't know about the rest of the country or world.

It's different in other countries. I know in my club you have to get to 2-kyu before you can don bogu.

Here in Oz - as well as Hakama and Keikogi

6th kyu requires at least Tare and Do
5th kyu adds on Kote
4th kyu is full bogu

If candidates were in full bogu we just wore the required pieces. (I didnt wear Kote and Men - but had them there anyway)

In our club, people start training in bogu during the second semester and they usually have 4th Kyu grade. The bogu is usually borrowed at that time. People start buying their armour during the second year...

Has anyone tried those functional fabric "sweat transporting" gis? Are they better than the duallayered indigo dyed cotton gis?

Yes, they're bloody horrible! Mine is rotting at the bottom of my cupboard. Stick to cotton.

Good only for training in really humid climates, like subtropics as it is here...but drawback is that you'll feel every hit that connects with your body. I have a gi that has the fabric sewn into the inner lining of my gi that I use that that's not too bad..I've seen others wear the thinner "sweat away" gi under their gi. Anyway, other than humid, not summers (or like here, relentless heat) you don't need it.

Perhaps one could wear an ordinary functional fabric sport T-shirt beneath the gi, for the same effect?

The super kiekogi (cotton with the wicking mesh lining) are fantastic. Emai sell for £40 and I think ebogu do too.

Hey, is it true that you get your own avatar after 60 posts?

surely you didn't ask that just for 1 more!

I don't know mate. But I do know that when you reach 1,000 your willie gets bigger and when you reach 5,000 your Local Kendo Federation award you Hachidan.

Yes.
And, could I exchange my hachidan for a willie that's five times bigger?

Yes.

unfortunately you have to surrender your tool at that point as hachidans adopt a monk-life existence and sacrifice their John Thomas in pursuit of perfection.

And I suppose I don't even get an alter boy?
Tough game I've gotten myself into here.
