Hello folks,

Does anyone know under which circumstances, and why, a Shinai would ever be 'Shaved'?

Just what the heck is "Shaving" a Shinai anyway?

Also, how do you all handle weight issues with your Shinai?

Thanks.

I shaved some longer splinters off of my shinai just this morning before sanding it. I think an explination is in most shinai maintainence FAQs.

Hmmm, weight issues, I usually put my shinai on a strict diet. Kote only ;).

Re: shaving - some people like to adjust the balance/feel of their shinai by shaving/sanding. You have to make sure you don't reduce the tip size or weight too much, if you're concerned about the shinai being legal for competition.

Get one of these. (http://images-cdn01.associatedcontent.com/150_0000036226_0000042420.jpg)

I use a razor knife. (http://www.iamanangelchaser.com/files/knife_designs/sheffield_folding_utility.jpg) It works great for fixing your shinai, cutting athletic tape off your toe, and removing excess kendo foot. Always shave upwards towards the tip or you will just be digging deeper into the shinai.

Somebody needs to hurry and come up with a witty smartass comment. It's a rare opportunity!

Just wait another month and a half, Miyahara sensei often sets aside a practice towards the end of the year to do a demonstration of his shinai preparation and maintenance techniques.

Shinais are full of fibers, very good for digestion. The carbons aren't very efficient nor tasty, but one stave of a bio shinai per week can do miracles, especially if it is oiled.
Arrghh! I just can't help from writing bad jokes.

No matter how smart ass answer, it couldn't be worse than the "Oiling shinai" thread before.

Actually the person who has shown me the most information on this topic is your teacher M. Miyahara sensei. He used to carry a wood working chisel with him and told me he could put the balance point anywhere he wanted. Bring the topic up with him and let us know what he sez.

Who do you think brought it up?

Your shinai getting a bit of stubble? Try waxing or depilitory creams instead. Might have better luck

But seriously, I use scissors. Just use one blade and scrape up towards the tip. They have a lower chance of digging in than a razor blade. Start by scraping perpendicular to the stalve. If you have a big splinter, remove it very carefully or your shinai will have a lovely hourglass look.

I've noticed that some Shinai can significantly be heavier than others even ones of the same make and model.

People forget the amount of bambo in the tsuka. Some have hardly any space in the 'core' of the handle, some are solid take to take. I'm sure that'd add a few grams.

Shaving the edges also means when they rub aagainst each other there's less chance of the fibres catching one each other and splintering off, which would be potentially more damging than just taking the edges down.

Personally, I like to wax my weapon to ensure maximum slidiness.

I did not know that Shinais could hit puberty.
