Do they give out dan grades to the ladies for dress sense?
In which case, the men probably get graded according to the number of badges they have.
I know we shouldn't jump to conclusions or be over-anxious to judge, but something inside of me is saying "No, sorry, wrong!"
Raindrop
20th November 2007, 04:53 AM
I dunno, on the one hand I feel bad cause I mean, I'm sure these people are serious, and they feel good with what they're doing and who am I to judge, right? However on the other hand, all I see is a group without proper technique or relationship with the steel, flailing about sharp swords which is very dangerous. There's a reason they use bokkuto for practice until you are skilled enough, and sorry, this is no skill.
That woman's clothes, well sorry, those are just laughable, they're bad for any sport or martial art. Well... actually from another woman's standpoint, they're just bad. Period :P

I think the videos need to be uploaded to youtube for, well, wider distribution. With commentary. Anybody know if the MST3K guys are available?
You know, I can picture a lot of dorks, myself included, who would video tape something that bad. But I think it takes someone really, REALLY special to then look at that video, and think, "yeah, this shows off my mad skillz really well, this is quality. I've gotta post this for all to see how absolutely fabulous I am!"
Wow.

I beg to differ. After close scrutiny of all the pictures and movies I come to the conclusion that she is not a Samurai. I come to this conclusion because she hangs out with Ninjas! The ever so elusive men (and woman apparantly) in black can be seen here. These are very rare pictures of the folks that crawl on the ceiling and hide in your toilet when they're out to get you.
I think it would be wise for everyone who has read this thread to watch your back, look under your bed and check the toilet bowl before you use it.

I think everyone's been rather soft on this crowd.
They follow just about every sokey-dokey method in the book:
They're American (no offence to the multitudes of excellent American budoka, but it's surprising just how many fakes/scamurai/33 1/3 dans come from the good ol' US of A)
"Interesting" names
Badges and patches
multi-coloured uniforms
Wierd footwear
"Mastery" of multiple styles
Unbelievably high grades
Jedi/Conan/Highlander Ryu sword methodsWhat's the bet their illustrious leader is on a Soke Board?

Grandmaster Hutton specializes in Knife Defensive Techniques (http://www.americankenpobu-jutsu.com/hutton.html) using a special knife that he has patented. (http://www.americankenpobu-jutsu.com/hutton.html)
So, how useful would that be then? I mean if he has to use a special knife he's patented. A rubber one or something? Even if it's not doesn't every mugger have to be supplied with one?

lol and this "pattented knife" is called "Hutton's Edge". xD
btw, here's more on this guy: http://www.huttonryu.com/SokeDPHutton.html
Notice how it doesn't mention ANYWHERE what dans he got and which senseis guided him. It only says what all he's a member of. He calls himself a grandmaster because he won a grandmaster award. Wow.
Any normal martial artists would proudly put in his bio under which senseis they have studied and how and when they received their dan grading... very suspicious this guy... and I cannot find anything else about his "pattented knife" either.
EDIT: Ah, I get it! He's a 10th dan in his own MA he made up: "Hutton Ryu Jitsu"

a more serious question is how can they do this, tell all this lies with a straight face?
They use japanese names and terminolgies for their stuffs but on this page (http://www.americankenpobu-jutsu.com/InternationalSoke.html) the picture is probably hinting that it is deeply hidden in the forest temple, ancestral birthplace of the art. it's so hidden that you won't find it in japan; guess what, because it's a chinese place, it's the Shaolin temple.

It's probably one of those cases where they filter through the responses before they are posted. So, most likely, your post won't be up there because it says nothing positive (not that there is, anyways) about their art and wantint to pursue the same thing he is doing.

I can't believe these people call themselves Karatekas...
And I decided to start my own martial art: Rainduropu Jutsu. I hereby declare myself 10th dan in Rainduropu-Jutsu... oh and I'm automatically Soke. Heh. In the dojo we wear bunny suits and we study the acient art of catching flies with chop sticks. Yep.

yeah, but what's the point of claiming something you are not? will you feel good about it while you know damn well you'll be a fool in the eyes of anybody that have some knowledge about martial arts? every nights when you go to bed how would you feel to know that you are a liar to your students and more importantly to yourself; that your students are looking up to you admiring you but you earned this admiration through a blatant lie. the students are too blame too, there is no excuse in this internet age to but so ignorants and let yourself fooled by some cons.

Of course it doesn't say anywhere what they mean by "recognized". See how it doesn't say "internationally recognized" or anything like that. So basicly Grandmaster Potatohead Jutsu Ninjer who is a 5th dan in his own creation is free to join.
I wonder if I they'd let a certified JKA godan enter or if they pack their stuff and run off to the next state? Then again no JKAer of any kind would ever want anything to do with these kind of people.

Personally, I thought having at least one guy be the The Professor made sense. After all, they had a bunch of The Skippers, and I noted several Gilligan's as well. And while they're seriously lacking in Gingers, they seem pretty flush with Mary Annes. Not really seeing any Mister and Misses Howells though.

Ok, we've established:
the soke boards
the hints that they are a legit Japanese art (complete with all the incorrect Japanese - a 10th dan is not kudan, no-one says shichidan, etc.)
the big gutted masters
the "proffessors" (what exactly do they proffess?)
10th dans who were born AFTER genuine 8th dan holders of real arts were already yudansha uchi-deshi or kenshusei
patented techniques
multiple titlesConclusion...
Fake crap.

I just went and queried all his qualifications which were obviously horseshit.
I did a kobudo class (which was equally pretend), had a chat later which did nothing but confirm the suspicions. I enjoyed his videos of him breaking bricks about 20 years ago, and the tough talk afterwards about him not backing down from anyone. It was kinda cute, considering I have had poos that were a greater danger to my wellbeing.

Well I'm not Scott, but.... Your website does give a slightly suspicious impression, many of the things written on it are similar to those written on websites for bad dojo (McDojo) sites. Lists of titles like Dr, Prof and so on tend to set off alarm bells for most people involved in budo that post on here and elsewhere. For example, I'm about to submit my PhD thesis, assuming I pass I will legitimately be able to call myself Dr. Haft. However this title is an academic one and bears no relation whatsoever to my budo experience or rank, none of my ranks in aikido, kendo or iaido entitle me to call myself Dr (or anything else for that matter). So I wouldn't do so myself.
Not wishing to question your credentials or experience, rather trying to point out some of the things that some people would interpret as suspicious claims with regards to Budo.
Regards
Mike

well I was honored by the title's from different organisations for my services to promote martial arts in particular at Hyderabad & generally in IndiaThe use of soke is not one that can be given from 'different organisations' - it is in fact the title of someone who acts as 'successor to and preserver of a particular historical and cultural legacy'*. It cannot realistically be applied to modern arts in the proper sense. It DOES NOT mean 'founder' or 'grandmaster'.
well I do belong to a family of mystic warriors having the tradition following from the lineage since 1400 years
I am incharge of the rituals of my forefathers shrine, am attaching a few photos for your referenceGreat stuff there, but unfortunately irrelevant to your useage of Japanese titles. Having a martial heritage in India does not confer anything in Japanese Budo. If it did, I would be claiming a Menkyo Kaiden in Knights-Templar-jutsu.

It is probably best that you don't expose yourself to such derision by using titles that are incorrect and questionable.

I personally don't have a problem with someone using the honorific title of Doctor even in iai or Kendo. the only thing I would suggest though is that it would tend to lead people into thinking that someone had a doctorate in these arts which would not be the case. As far as I am aware not even the Japanese infer such titles onto martial art students.
I agree about the Soke and it does imply delusions of grandeur which tend to be associated with the McDojo cults.
My thought on this chaps site would be that it come across as self- aggrandising and would benefit from quite a lot more humility. But I acknowledge ths is from my own, very English perspective, and things are likely to be done very differently on the Indian sub-continent. But still I would advise to tone it down considerably and show a lot more humility.

That's kinda what I was saying, using a legitimate academic title is fine, just that unfortunately because of a long history of abuse by martial arts charlatans it can look awkward on a website.
The only time I'd use an academic title like Dr or Prof on a budo related site was if there was a list of other people on there that included their title of Mr, Ms or Mrs, i.e.:
Mr. John Smith 2nd Dan
Ms Jane Doe 1st Dan
Dr. John Doe 3rd Dan etc etc...
I'd not do this:
John Smith 2nd Dan
Jane Doe 1st Dan
Dr John Doe 3rd Dan
It implies that the academic title is related to the budo qualifications of the person.
I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to use a title you've earned or been bestowed by someone, it's just unfortunate that the fraudsters have got there first and made it look bad. We got into trouble over on E-Budo because my aikido teacher is also a Rev and someone posted a thread on there questioning his legitimacy, of course as in this thread the fraud hunters came out to expose him and managed to expose him as having a legitimate 7th Dan awarded by one of Ueshiba's uchideshi. Bang up job there guys. One of the most objectionable things they said was that him being a Rev meant he was some sort of cult leader when his rev title has nothing to do with his aikido. So I have sympathy for anyone else put through this process (waves at kendoindia), but I do have to say that our old website didn't make it clear what was what and probably lead to the situation being worse than it needed to be (I've since re-designed the whole site (http://www.bhaikido.co.uk)), I'm still in two minds as to the Rev title being on there at all and suspect I'll prob remove it. Only reason I haven't already is that Rev is a title less abused by McDojo fraudsters as Dr or Prof...
Best

Could you please adress this:
Dr Mahmoodi,
Your site says you are 10th dan in Ninjutsu?
Who awarded you this rank.
It also says you are a member of the BBD (Bujinkan Brian Dojo.)
When was the last time you trained with Brian McCarthy?
What rank do you hold in the BBD?
I'd be bloody surprised if it's 10th Dan for sure!
Oh and just for good measure I'd love to hear about your Koga Ryu experience.
For some reason you keep missing this.

Shouldn't need a membership card for that. Are you still a current BBD member?
Who gave you your Judan in Ninjutsu?
I'm trying to keep to questions that wont involve you having to look through boxed up stuff. Funnily enough they are the same questions which really shouldn't be too hard to answer.
How long have you trained in Koga Ryu?

Well you can get a doctorate in martial arts. There are several universities in Japan that have masters level and doctorate programs. They teach theory, history, biomechanics, etc. You can major in kendo, judo or "other" (being a mix of several I think).
I've actually considered going but my wife would probably hang me out to dry for going back to school....:disapp: Just think...everyday would be kendo day....no job...no worries....just kendo.

Yes, but not exactly, my understanding is that these are sports science students to start with, not just kendo students. I believe they sort of 'major' with one of the martial arts and go on to further academic qualifications, but not just training in Kendo.

It's a bit like a kinesiology degree that specializes in only one sport but I'm pretty sure they call it a budo degree. I'll have to go home and check though....don't feel like sifting through the net at work.

Sorry, I just reread my post, hope it didn't come across a bit snotty. After re-reading yours I think that we are talking about the same thing, just wanted to make a point that there is a proper academic program (including research), they are probably called budo degrees but I reckon they are essentially sports science with a view to martial arts.
I should have read your post more carefully in the first place...

[snip] This research department of the martial arts sports culture system, the motor system, health science, sports science and medical system, and Coaching Science, and the four series from them, both related to martial arts sports today - Research topics discussed as a problem, active research activities.
They also cover other 'western' sports ( gymnastics, etc...). Is a genuine academic facility/university (including overseas student programs), not a McDojo ran by fat blokes wearing greasy ninja t-shirts who are awarding judan grades to 25 year olds
