View Full Version : Moving!

Hey guess what? I'm moving to Perth! Woo-hoo!

But don't despair. SA will still have a representative at the Aus Nationals cos I'm still SAKA apparently until AKR fees are due (speaking of which, who else is going?) Probably a good thing cos Kristian has to leave before competition and gradings which means I'll be the only SA representative there again, even though I'll be living in WA by that stage....

I'm not too familiar with Aussie Jodo. What is there in Perth? :)

Good stuff Newbie - bad for SAKR ancillary arts, you people never seem to get to critical mass :( - but very good for your development since there is sensei level instruction in both Iai and Jo in Perth. (Speaking of which my knees are now almost recovered from the 13 hours of iai the other weekend with Ramon... its tough getting old and feeble of leg!)

Hey Newb, so who's gonna run the SAKR Nationals in a couple of years then?

Newbie
07-12-2007, 08:06 AM
Kristian was always going to run it, and guys - it's SAKA, not SAKR. I'll still give him a hand from here as much as I can, though it wont be much :(

Trust me, I do feel guilty about what's going to happen to jodo here.

So you are definitely moving then. Good for you.

have sent your pressie so you can't move till you get it.

Oh wait, I live in New York :)

So you are definitely moving then. Good for you.

Thought I sent you a text? Oh well. My pressie will hopefully be sent soon.

Dervish - I'm devestated that we're gonna be seperated by 2,000km less than we were before, too.

Aden, what you and Bob went through for three days I'll cop twice a week for the rest of my life!! My knees are safe at least till I can do kneeling kata again. Though I did three/four lots of tandoku on Sunday and for some reason was pretty knackered from that. But it'd been a full on weekend with almost no sleep after the Friday night breakin and all that.

No need for kneeling - sensei has standing versions of the seitei for the differently enabled of knee :).

By the time your knees are working you should be ready for koryu (which n our case is a bit more knee dependent than seitei).

And to reply to myself since I missed the 5 minute edit window:)

For people who realise Wollongong is a long way from Perth being over 4,000km away by road - we are under the Perth Budokan for seitei jo, seitei iai and koryu iai, we just don't see them very often so are envious of Newbie.

You're envious of me? Dude, you have SATIN BOWER BIRDS outside the back door of your dojo!! That is so full of amazing awesome and I'm really sad I didn't get a picture of it. And never can now my camera's been stolen.

But training twice a week's gonna be pretty cool :) Except no jodo training on weekends. That makes me sad.

Marcus_P
12-12-2007, 02:22 AM
Iai training THREE times a week at least. Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sunday mornings. Kendo training at least three times a week too if you choose to do it at the same dojo. Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. And there might even be some Iai on Saturday. But as far as I know no Jodo on Saturday anymore since I moved here.

Saves time that way.

Maybe we could set up video conferencing and you and Kristian can take turns instructing me on weekends ;)

Marcus_P

yeah don't forget the time difference between here and Perth is a lot greater than the time difference between Adelaide and Perth.

Newbie
15-12-2007, 04:28 PM
What kinda sempai are you if you're not willing to get up at three in the morning to teleconference training?

;)

I just earnt myself a hundred hayasuburi, didn't I?

Darling Newbie!! Sorry I havent gotten back to you sooner, Ive been stuck up the beyond of yonder with dodgy phone reception! Im so excited that you are coming over to Perth, we are finally going to drink that bottle of saki we have been talking about for ages. You are welcome to train with us, watch, or participate in post-kieko-picklings. Woo!
See you soon, let me know when you actually arrive and hopefully Ill be in town to take you out :]

Newbie
17-12-2007, 11:05 PM
Still no kendo I'm afraid :( Kristian let me do some standing iai on Sunday but in review, wants me to work on moving easily and my cuts rather than kata. And of course, jodo grading coming up so nothing else seems quite so important. Will have to find a new therapist for my knee! But it is slowly getting better. Have already figured out roughly how to get to Willow Ponds dojo from where I'm living :)

And I'm SOOOOOO gonna take you up on your offer. Guess when I get in? New Year's Eve!

Marcus_P
18-12-2007, 02:04 AM
Which suburb are you staying in?

Newbie
18-12-2007, 10:59 AM
I'm gonna be living in Lathlain.

Newbie
19-12-2007, 11:57 AM
I take back what I said earlier. Looking (or rather desperately attempting to unravel) the Perth public transport website, it's gonna take over an hour to get the Willow Ponds with transfers and stuff. This completely sucks.

Any WA people out there can tell me exactly how to get from either Lathlain to Canning Vale or from the city to Canning Vale? Apparently I'm only ten minutes out of the city so if leaving from the city is easier, so be it. But I'm completely lost and confused by the website but it doens't look a pretty journey.

Oh, and Russ said he didn't know of anyone living out that way at this stage, either so cadging lifts is out.

Marcus_P
19-12-2007, 03:20 PM
Hahaha, I would have been close by... If I was still there! *Grins*

Let me think about it.

Marcus_P
19-12-2007, 03:31 PM
I assume you're using transperth.wa.gov.au? The long and short of it is, as far as I'm aware, it's gonna be a bitch to catch public transport. Even if it was fine getting to the dojo in the early arvo, by the time we finish training at night, public transport home would be (a) a nightmare, (b) unsafe. Oh Perth, your public transport does suck arse.

However, I know of two people who live relatively close to you - depending on which part of Lathlain you are in.

Kin no Shounen (Chris B) lives in Welshpool, one suburb South East of yours. I don't think he's been going to Canning Vale training recently, but he used to go regularly on Tuesdays. I know who goes up to Wembley to train on Thursdays - which is beyond the city, so worst comes to worse, if he's willing to give you a ride, at least you get to go to a training session on Thursdays (just not Canning Vale). He used to train on Saturdays too - last I heard from him he's only been training once a week at Wembley. I can get in touch with him and see if he can help you out if you want.

Chris D lives in Vic Park, one suburb South West of yours. He's been out of training most of this year due to a crappy work schedule first half of the year (he's changed departments now), and a broken collar bone the latter half the year. I spoke to him earlier today and he said he's planning on going back to training in January. You haven't met Chris D. I can have a word with him if you want too.

Michael H (who you met) lives in Bentley - a couple of suburbs South of you. I used to live with him, so he is where I would have been, but he's moving to Melbourne early next year for a job, so he's out - though he might be able to help you out early on in the year. He hasn't been going to training recently as he's been quite busy at work. Though the bastard just bought a new sword and hasn't christened it yet, so he should go.

Basically: Do you want me to try sort something out for you?

Brendan

Train to Thornlie is the most direct route i can think of from Lathlain... From either the Carlisle or Vic Park train stations (I think the Lathlain train station doesn't exist anymore)

The Thornlie train station is about 3km from Budokan Academy(down Yale Road) i think...

From the city the 883 or 884 buses will be able to get you to BA, the 884 used to drop me at the driveway, and the 883 will get you close.

You probably could catch either of these bus's from the Thornlie Train station to BA though I'm not sure, because I used to live on the city side of those routes, best to check the latest maps and timetables.

The bus routes may have changed since I last was in Perth, due to the new Southside rail system.

I like Marcus' idea :D Especially if the transport's not safe. Hell, Adelaide's not bad and a thrown rock shattered the bus window I was on tonight. I usually escape the worst of catching public transport at night by being in reflective work uniform but I wont have that in Perth..

As there's no jodo on the weekends, I was planning on training Tuesday and Thursday nights. If Michael could give me a lift till I find my feet, that would be awsomesque, or any of the others, really. I'll give you my street address next time you're online.

How did you get home but, Brendan?

Brendan
20-12-2007, 12:50 PM
true true...

I got home thanks to the kindness of Marcus and Jeff-sensei..

I only did the train station walk when i had to get to northbridge pretty much immediately after training... :P

I may have to try out the public transport system in January when I will be in Perth...

I'll try and make it to training in the two weeks leading up to the nationals... Just hope I remember to bring everything

Marcus_P
21-12-2007, 02:16 AM
lol, my point wasn't to get thanks - my point was to illustrate that while the trains weren't too bad, the bus system sucks late at night.

Only a day and a half left in Adelaide! Which means only a day and a half left of net access, I think. Really busy packing (aka watching Bamboo Blade) but a quick thing I nearly forgot to ask of those who've spent time in the big western state - swimming pools. I've tried looking on the net a few times for a swim centre near Lathlain or the city itself and haven't had any luck. I need to keep rehabilitating this knee or I'll never get back to doing seated iaido or any kendo and my jodo wont improve.

Any one know of anywhere?

Marcus_P
30-12-2007, 07:43 AM
There'll be a few around, I'm sure. I dunno if there is one in Lathlain itself, but you should be able to find one near Albany Highway.

No sure on the nearest swimming pool only place, there are alot of gyms with them on Albany Highway. In searching try "aquatic center" as they are't generally known as swimming pools in the phone book.

I can try and find out some info if you need a hand as I live 20 min away from where you are staying although I work closer (working in Bentley)

I looked in the street directory when I got here and found one that's not too far and away, and just to be nice on the same bus route home. :) Tomorrow night I've been invited to go watch Murdoch Uni kendo train and next Tuesday I should be starting jodo out at Canning Vale (though no matter how many times I look at it, getting there is not going to be fun). Alison was very sweet and picked me up from the airport then took me to get some kitty litter for my VERY unimpressed cat who seems to be getting along with the local dog surprisingly clawlessly. Euan came over and helped us celebrate New Year for many beer drinking hours. Today two of my housemates showed me how to get to work tomorrow morning and we went up to King's Park for a while. Quite strange walking through scrub and then looking up and seeing an imminent sky scraper.

Good luck on your move. I have been travelling to Perth every month for the last 9 months. I was due back in Feb but it looks like I'm not travelling anymore.

Which is good. But, I will miss Perth - it's a great city. Sadly, I never made it to the Katori Shinto Ryu dojo.

Welcome to sunny Perth.
Have you heard of Dr. Lee, she is a seventh dan in both jodo and iaido, and has been living in Perth for nearly five years, best teacher I ever had.

Just got back from the Gold Coast Iai/Jo nationals yesterday, both Newbie and Dr Lee were there....

Jodo participation was somewhat disappointing, only 4 shodan and 1 nidan candidate challenged.

(who did no Jo at seminar but had Dr Lee as his Iai instructor for 4 sessions)

That sucks. Really sorry I couldn't be there, plane fare was just so damn expensive... Hopefully I'll be there next year. Where is it next year, Aden?

Has anyone heard from Arwen since her move?

That would indeed be Dr Loi Lee.

Yeah, I've heard from her. She was v tired. And she passed her grading at the nationals. Grats!
