I'm wondering what the typical lead time is when ordering Bogu...say a nice quality 3mm machine set? How much longer does it take for hand-stitched as opposed to machine-stitched? I'm sure all the companies differ somewhat in this regard. Anybody have any good or bad experiences to share? Waiting is the hardest part!

It should be depend on each company and the grade of bogu like most machine stitch bogu are made already ( most of Japanese and Korean machine stitch bogu) so it should take about 2 to 3 weeks after order or paymant received to reach your home if it is custom made it can take time to 4 weeks for manufacture. But for hand made it should be depend on whether is it ready made or order custom made. Ready made hand stitch bogu should take about 2 to 3 weeks after order or paymant received to reach your home. For custom made or order made should be between 1 half to 6 month depend on the grade and company of bogu.
When I order my deluxe 2mm machine stitch bogu from Korea (e-kendo) it took 4 weeks for making as it is not their regular product and take 2 more weeks to reach to my house. For the bogu company that do not accept credit card, it might take event longer as they tend to wait for payment before process order which it can take 2-3 week for money to reach bogu company bank account or may be even longer if use international money order.

Shipping by sea-mail from Japan to North America takes about 1 month. Shipping by EMS takes 2 days. Processing your order takes 1 or 2 weeks usually for stock stuff, and as much as 3 months for custom.

EMS service to Canada at least is very good and fast, and the brokerage charges very reasonable. They partner with a reputable courier service in the destination country, so even though it leaves Japan EMS it arrives in your country as something else (Purolator for Canada). Cost is much less than UPS or Fedex, service seems just as good to me. Also works for shinai to North America which can't be delivered through USPS or Canada Post.

Thanks for the replies! I had heard of some people waiting months and months, but for the kind of set I need it sounds like only a few weeks. I hope I can get a pretty good fit with the off the shelf stuff. Do most companies offer hand-stitching the inner lining of the men to match your face better, or is that something only eguchi does?

Hi all,
If Nine circles have got the item in stock about 1 - 2 days for the UK and about 1 week for the rest of the world.
They have got loads of stock in, but if they dont have your item it will take about a month to import.
The velvet bit inside the Men is amost always hand stiched.

Also works for shinai to North America which can't be delivered through USPS or Canada Post. Please don't inform my local post office about that, then. I always get the orders for out club equipment through USPS. The last was a big box of shinai and bokuto.

Where did you get them from? If you order from Japan, it can't come by USPS.

Where did you get them from? If you order from Japan, it can't come by USPS.From Koei through BoguBag. And yes, they come directly from Koei, not Stroud sensei's garage. They have the customs declarations and everything on them.
I don't see why they can't come USPS. They're just wood and bamboo. It'd be equivalent to not being able to send a baseball bat through the mail.

When I got stuff from Koei (shinai, gi, etc.), the regular Postman delivered it but it was marked and sent by EMS.

It's a length limitation, not the materials. Normally anything over 105 cm can't be sent to North America through the postal service. Perhaps they've lifted that regulation lately but I've always had to use EMS.

I got mine sent via LAND MAIL 3 and a half months from Japan to Ireland
I had mine sent to my buisness address as I find they are less lilkely to stop buisness packages.
fast delivery means HUGE added costs approx. €120-180 extra. I would rather send that money on an extra pair of kote.
I think it was worth the wait for my bogu and as I have extra kote aswell.

Perhaps they've lifted that regulation lately but I've always had to use EMS.Well, despite many Americans perception, Canada and the US are different countries ;). In the US, the maximum package size is length plus girth at 130 inches and weight at 70 pounds. I don't think that's a recent development either.

There's a difference between domestic restrictions and international restrictions. This particular restriction on length of packages from Japan has been in place for some time. Tozando used to have it explicitly spelt out in their catalogs, and it applied to both US and Canada. It's possible that your shinai were actually sent EMS and simply arrived through your local postal service as some other fellow speculated. If you look here (http://www.bogubag.com/Swords/Bokutoh/bokutoh.html) for example, you'll note the only shipping that Robert offers for bokutoh is EMS. This is due to the restriction. I note he offers domestic shipping for shinai - in this case he may be bringing them in in bulk and then distributing.
