Just reading through the editorial in issue 2.

I have a long, long way to go before I can even consider going for shogo titles. But perhaps one day when I consider it I would prefer to do it in English rather than Japanese.

I think it would be beneficial to every kendo nation outside of Japan if there was a world-wide standard for these tests which should be available to that individual's own language.

As to the marking of such exams I think the AJKF should have the final authority on that. Of course there will be language difficulties but surely this would be nothing compared to the, shall we say, "bad grammer" I would produce by trying to write my answer in Japanese!!!!

Any thoughts??:p

I totally agree, John, there should be a standard that is understood by all countries.

Rather than the AJKF, the IKF should be the governing body for such a system, but at the moment it seems to be in the too hard basket. For example, the definitions of the shogo titles had to be translated by Alex, as the federation couldn't come up with a suitable English translation, hence simply leaving them out of the English version of the rulebook.

Reply to thoughts on Shogo or titles.....where these not originally created by the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai which governed all rank and title prior to WWII....then kendo was reorganized in the 1950's as the AJKF....which is of importance, proficiency in reading and writing in Japanese or proficiency in Kendo and contribution to kendo and kendo instruction...after all are not shogo recognizaion of teaching abiblity
