I really look forward to hitting people with sticks.

It could be enough time, if your dojo/club goes kind of slow, as in emphasizing the basics, you can go home and practice in front of the mirror at home. Just do something that you know you are doing correct and make it a part of you so you dont even have to think to do it.
Since you are just starting, FOCUS on BASICS. Dont get to hyped up about getting to hit people with sticks. You dont get to do that unti la few weeks, if not a few months later. If you dont get the BASICS down solid, your hits wont count for $#!^.
I mean no offense, I am not trying to put you down or anything like that. I went to a dojo where they liked to progress rather rapidly and they have a kendoist that cant keep his left foot straight, EVER!
But for the love of Jebus, focus on footwork. And who says you have to stop practicing it, you can do them in your dreams too! I know I have!
Scarey, I know...

If it is enough for you than it is enough. It all depends on what you want to get out of kendo. Some people are fine with 1 hour a week, while others are go 3 time a week and feel that is not enough.

Is your practice a one hour session? My wife and I go once a week as well but it is a three hour practice(and we have to drive two hours to get to it!). Our Sensei's, Japanese 5 and 6 Dan, say we are progressing nicely...and of course we are practicing at home by the mirror too!

if once a week is all they practise... what can u do?
just remember to practise 100% when u go, sometimes if u go 3+ times a week it is easy to get lazy and doing 100% once a week is probably better than 60% 3 times a week
but when i was practising once a week i was suffering major kendo withdrawal

Once a week might be enough!!!! for you who know!!!
But my suggestion would be that when you go to kendo parctices, you should
pay full attention ot the things that your sensei is teaching you. Remember
all the of the correct stuff and try to work on you minor mistake.(if there is
any.) Put aside time for you practice. (As many as how many kendo practice
you need to miss or more) But more would be what I recument.
