Hi! This is my first post in here.
I'm ikkyu, and several months ago I had a problem with my fingers in my left hand. I asked it to my sensei and with a japanese 8th dan, and they proposed me to start doing nito (sei nito in this case), becouse this technique releases the movement and tension in this left hand fingers.
I start doing it, and after a couple of months, I am enjoying it, the pain is lower and I am very happy. Buy reading in this forum and in other sources, I see that everybody disagrees to start nito too early.
What do you think about?

I'm sure a 8th dan and your sensei have more leverage in say in what you do in Kendo then a bunch of internet people.

I think your sensei is probably right^^

Usually, I think, nito is disadvised because it is somewhat flashy of a low ranked kendoka to start nito (or jodan) if he hasn't got enough experience in chudan first. But this is not your case, so I don't see any problems. Why it is or whether it should be disadvised for low ranked kendoka is another question.

What problems do you have with your left hand if you do not mind me asking?

I just hope you have a teacher who also practises nito who can teach you.

I think MSPaintClock is correct. If you sensei(and an 8th dan sensei at that!) says you should start nito due to your circumstances, than what you are doing is more than just OK.

If anyone tells you that what you are doings is wrong, they are putting their opinion against you sensie. And unless that person is also 8th dan. Your sensei wins everytime.

Have fun!

You have a good reason to switch and support from your instructors. Most ikkyu that want to try nito don't have these things. Good luck with your practice!

Good luck!
I think it'll be a lot harder to learn kendo through nito. But it'll be fun. =)

Oneiromante, i dont think the problem is with trying to learn nito, i think its trying to learn two very different styles when you are new to kendo.
For the majority regular kendo is hard enough without trying to also learn another style. I dont think there is anything wrong per say in learning nito from the outset as long as long as all your focus is in it (and not chudan kendo) but as others have said, if your sensei allow this then they are obviously willing to give you the extra instruction.
Make it work to your advantage and you will probably have something extra for shiai in a few year ;)

I don't think there is anything wrong with learning nito instead of chudan if they have a sensei who is a proficient nito player and can teach you the correct techniques.

The worst case scenario is for you to be told to do nito and go off and fend for yourself. You will end up having someone who can club with 2 sticks.

Hey if your teacher says so they must know best for you! good luck and enjoy

Just go with what your senseis telling/showing/teaching you. sounds like fun. :)

They can see things in your Kendo you cannot.......and will oft guide you appropriately.

Thank you very much for your support (nobody of us killed me for doing nito, wow!). I think I have more dificulties in my progression (I find the nito training harder but funnier, and all in all I must do exams and so with itto), but I like difficult things!

Dumb question: Why not do your exams in nito? As long as the reason for it is clear to the exam commission, I don't understand why you have to handicap yourself by taking the exam in itto...

Best of luck with your practice.

I've also heard lots of disparaging remarks about people who practice nito when they don't understand enough about chudan yet. I practice nito exclusively because of a series of hernias and apart from a scant few occasions no one has said anything rude about it. I think as long as you aren't doing it to be different from everyone else and stand out, people will respect that you are working hard on your kendo just like they are on their own.

Be prepared though when you compete in taikai people will watch you very intently.

As for testing with nito, at low ranks people really won't know how to deal with nito. That will hurt their test. Kihon waza performed from nito look very different from what everyone else will be expected to do making it just that much more difficult for judges to properly grade you.

Yeah, I can see that problem (getting graded for promotion) because there aren't many sensei who are proficient in its use. Also, part of the promotion test is being anonymous so there is a slight problem there in using a unique style -the judges have probably seen you fight before and might judge you on your past performances.

I agree, you should be allowed to test in nitto...there is a good chance you would fail in chudan because a)you don't practice in it and b)you can't physically do it.

The basic concepts of kendo still apply in nitto so that's what they should be testing you on.
Footwork, how you strike, zanshin, etc...

My last test (ikkyu), was my first test doing nito, and when I was preparing it, a seventh dan sensei tells me that is not allowed to do it with nitto until sandan or higher. Anyone have more information about it?

Yes, Nito is cheating. Just like it would be if your shinai was longer or extend able.:)

No, no....listen to the nameless, faceless, internet people...especially if they ask you for financial details, or your address, or if they send you telepathic messages...
