Size 39 is standard for Men above 18. Why, because we are Macho:silly:

39 is normal. If you enter competition, your shinai must weigh at least 510 g without tsuba and be no more than 120 cm long. A standard 39 shinai is 120 cm long and around 520 g or so. May as well get used to what you have to use.

I remember reading somewhere that tsukagawa length is dependant on height, 39 Shinai should come as standard with 38 tsukagawa's rather than 39's......
I'm a shortie myself (5'6") I find using a shorter tsukagawa helps me... The longer one's just don't feel right.... But like everything it's a personal thing..:)

I agree with you Fraz. I found the shorter shinai to be easiers to handdle.

The long one is more difficult for me to handdle. But then again maybe it

is that I have give enough time to it.

Just got the 39 size shinai two day ago.

If you are practicing on your own (rather, there is no dojo for you to go to for kendo), than 39.

If you do go to (or are going to go to) a dojo, ask your sensei. He might even be able to supply you a shinai through your dojo. Thats what I did, they got a discount rate on them since the purchased them in bulk, and there was no confusions on what length I needed, and so forth.

Shinai size is one thing - you should use a 39. Youa re a male over 18, thats it!

Tsukagawa can be the length that suits your build, so if you shorten it, that is OK.

A guide is hold the shinai in your right hand with your arm extended in front of you, bend your arm 90 degrees with the shinai pointing straight up, allow the base of the the tsuka to rest on the inside of the elbow joint, apply the correct grip with your right hand.

With the inside of your wrist facing your face, where the top of your right index fingure rests on the tsuka make a mark.

That is where the top of the tsuka should be.

Then allow a 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch, or so, between that mark and the tsuba for you to hold your shinai correctly in both hands in kamae if your tsukagawa is shortened.

Remember that It can also be a good idea to practice suburi with boku-to as it helps develop a proper grip

Well, size DOES matter!

Or was it "It's not the flesh, it's the move" ?
