Hi everyone! This is my first time to post on this forum, so let me say "nice to meet you guys" first! : )
And my situation is I need to design a poster for my club for recruiting more people to join. Of course I need to put the time and location of training but I also need to tell the public what Kendo is. My poster is quite small ( I guess it would be printed into A4 only, or for the largest A3) so I don't have much space to write too much.
So does anyone has any suggestion of slogan about Kendo, which can attracted people to join? I think I can only write about two or three sentences...
Thanks very much!:)

We dont explicitly state what kendo is, I find a picture speaks a thousand words.

Group photo of your kendo class with men on and holding shinai, with large font caption "Men in Indigo".

We just call it "Traditional Japanese Fencing". You can find our poster here (http://www.kendo-sask.com/misc/poster.doc), feel free to modify and use it if you like it. We print it on 11X17 paper, as that stands out from the sea of letter-sized posters that people usually put up.

The Yell and Whack Program. Japanese version.
What Neil Said.
Wasn't there a UCL thing along the lines of "Breaking hearts and faces"?

or the ever popular
"Come to kendo, cause we know were you live" :)

"Get your men here" might not attract the kind of person you want.
Definitely avoid any "samurai" references - you'll only end up getting loonies enquiring.
I'd go for Neil's approach, although Dervish's sounds quite funny and amusing.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions! so far my poster have a picture of men(bogu), i afraid people will not know what the hack is that...therefore i'm thinking i should add some words to tell people what is kendo...maybe i need to draw a new picture of two people fighting...then that maybe will be better

I say, take a picture of your club after everyone's done 1000 suburi's.
That would be a more accurate representations of what to expect after they join.

If you can, take two kendo-players crossing swords and overlap them over a photo/pic of two samurai crossing swords. Make the samurai in the background and the kendo in the foreground. That would be cool.

Must spread more rep blah blah. This sounds groovy dooby.
For the poster - you need it stand out.
The Europeans Iai/Jodo 2004 had a great poster which was basically photos done in red and black with white text overlaid - very dramatic and eye catching.
We did one once in sepia - this was a photo of two people doing tachi Uchi no Kurai. The shot was taken from below waist line looking up so it was very dynamic angle. We took lots of photos and picked the best one, removed the background using photoshop and then switched to a sepia effect which made it look very different to either black and white or colour. We also went for on odd size and shape to make it stand out from the 'crowd'. We went for white text and made sure the main details were included - if your Sensei is quite a high grade I would add that in as well as location, contact details and dates/times. Do not put money, looks naff. Get them excited by the concept.
Why not have a lok at other poster on the Internet - see what is out there. And do not just focus on martial arts ones - look at other ones nothing to do with MA or even sport/hobbies; good place to find inspiration. Remember Posters are art and all art has been plagiarised.
Good luck. And after all our advice we need to see the finished product when it is done.

I would like to have it very attractive too. But due to limited budget, we can only print in B/W...And for putting my Sensei's rank, I don't know if he will like it coz he's a very low profile person. yep i agree that i should not mention money yet, hehe.
and yeah i guess i will post my final poster later, since u guys have help me so much!

Picture of two club members in either issoku ito no maai or tsubazeriai, a nice action shot would be good but hard to get unless you have a photographer in your midst.
Black and white (may need to do some photoshoppin' to make it look nice)
Below the pic just write KENDO in a large sized font with JAPANESE FENCING under it in a slightly smaller font.
Date, time, map, email, website blah blah blah

Just thought of a slogan..
" kendo...come and beaten by people with long cane sticks whilst dressed in black "
Or would this be more suited to advertising an S&M emporium?
