I am new at kendo.
So, my question my seem weird to you all.
Should I take weight training class or go to gym to lift weight?
I am prety skinny and weak. I can lift (max 80lbs)
Do I really need to take it to improve my
strength in kendo? Would it help me more?

If you find you are getting tired or that kendo class is too much for you, absolutely supplement it with some cross-training. Not only weights, but some aerobic activity too (running, cycling, stair-climbing, whatever you like). Overall fitness improvement will help your kendo.

hehe
i guess it depends on if you're a guy or a girl.
80lbs is a little light for a guy, good for a girl i guess, since most of them have never lifted anything in there life.
But, overall fitness is more important than strength. So, don't worry about strength that much, some guys i know in kendo are pretty weak, but still really good in kendo..
and forms is more important than fitness too i guess.... but you have to develope your kendo muscles too to do them well.

Hi Chanon,
I dont think lifting weights will improve your kendo that much. Yes a certain degree of strength will supplement your training but i dont believe it will improve your kendo in any serious way. The only way to improve kendo is to practice kendo. I do think that doing some cardio work will help you get through the rigours of training more easily and doing some light weights will help your arms
in the initial stages but i dont think there are any major benefits
that will come from doing weights. As everyone else will say, technique and speed of body/mind are the more important than physical strength in kendo

In my opinion the best way to improve your strength in Kendo is to do a lot of suburi at home. I've been doing kendo for the past 3 years and after i had goten the basics of how to hold the shinai and hot to do proper okuriashi i made i program for myself consisting of:
1. Warmups
2. Ashi sabaki (footwork) practise :500 steps
3. 150 Suburi, 150 naname-suburi
Nowdays i've droped the ashisabaki part and i am doing 1000 suburi. I think for starters 300 suburi is ok, but you should always rememeber not to hurry and to take your time and acertain that you are doing suburi and ashisabaki corectly no left heel turning , yor hands gripping the shinai corectly etc.
Hope this helps , best wishes for your kendo training

Sounds good to me.
I am just wondering that, if you practice that much in the past until now.
How are you doing in kendo at your dojo?

Ha, I wish I would have saw this a minute ago, I just started a thread on this idea. Although, I think i'm asking slightly different questions, so I'll just hope I dont get pointed back here. :silly:
Anyways, most definatly, start lifting weights, just dont slack off on subari exercizes as well. They compliment each other very well. If you want to do just a little bit of kendo training everyday, you can do what I do, switch back and forth between days you lift weights, and days you do subari exercizes. Also, if you dont have a weight room, my senpai always instructed me to just swing with two shinais in your hand. If you dont have two shinais, and you are like me and dont have hands big enough to hold two, buy a Suburiko (shinai weight). It's just like the kind they use in baseball, it just slides right on. It's definatly not the same, if you can hold two shinais go for it. The shinai weight only adds an extra 7 oz of weight on it. But if you really cant get both of em in your hand, its better than nothing :silly:. I bought mine at: E-Bogu (http://www.e-bogu.com/sushwe.html). You can probably find them in other places too, though.
And its also good to stay in cardiovascular shape. A high stamina would serve anyone well in long matches (or just extra hard practices!)

All this kihon practise has helped my kendo imensely because it has helped develop my cardiovascular activity, my strength and stamina. Now that we are learning some more atacks/defenses and techiques it is much easyer for me to execute them. It has also helped me in hiting clearly doing jigeiko. So, mu sugestion to you is stik to the basics and train diligently and i'm sure your kendo will improve. Even 15 minutes to half an hour a day will help.

80 pounds doesn't really tel l us much....it's kinda light for the squat deck, so-so for a bench press, but awsome for a one handed concentration curl.:beard:

Man, if I could curl 80 one-handed I don't think I could fit into my kendogi. At least I can beat that on a bench...

Okay mannnnn!!! I am just guessing that, that is my maximum weights.
Because I haven't lift weight for about 3 years now. It was the maximum
weights when I first started lifting.mannnnn
Oh!!!
I just order some green egg looking thing from e-bogu yesterday. I is a weight
that could be attach to the shinai, when you practice suburi.
I think it is prety coolll. That's why I bought it.
Hopefully it will help me greatly.

Was it the Suburiko that i suggested in my entry above? :silly:
That is a great thing. I like mine a lot, but I still switch between doing weighted subari exercizes and weights themeselves.

Don't worry if you can lift only 80 lbs. I used to only be able to lift about that much weight before too...of course that was when I was in 5th grade tho...
