I've owned one (Model A03 - 50 Bamboo) for about 10 years and it has been through thousands of practices...and it is still in great shape for another couple thousand practices. It does absorb strikes to the body quite well..definitely better than a fiber do..

The shine on the Do really has the shine of a Roiro Do and if you didn't tell someone that it wasn't a 50 bamboo Do.... nobody would be the wiser.

Of course, nothing beats a 60 bamboo Do...but a Yamato Do would be an economical alternative in between a fiber and a bamboo Do...

I'm assuming that the Yamato do is like a bamboo do except the slats are plastic? If is then i guess i have one myself!

amatsuda sensei, if you have the time can you please explain to us the different types of bougu?I always see different names but don't really know the difference. The only types i know are fiber and bamboo. I heard there are many types in between and different kinds of bamboo.....and not just the amount of slats.

Jarlaxe san why don't you look at this page from bogubag.com, it's 60 piece real bamboo doh at a cost $325 and ask Stroud sensei whether he can make order for you not (I'm sure that he can)
http://www.bogubag.com/Bogu/Specials/bogu_specials.html

I'm sure that it's much more cost effective than Yamato doh from e-bogu and bogubag also has yamato doh with much cheaper price.

i would consider a `real` bamboo do ...not a fiber one...

are bamboo do's better or yamato ones? from i have gotten from e-bogu.com, it seems to me that yamato do are better for shock absorbstion and will fit you better and yet bamboo ones are more expansive!? :puzzled:

i think its because of the manufacturing process as its more traditional and natural...but on the other hand i am not that experienced to compare them...
but to me its sounds like a wood versus fiber violin?!
i am sure there must be someone in this forum who had tried both and felt the difference....

I have been told just the opposite, that...
1. Bamboo is heavier, therefore more comfortable
2. Bamboo absorbs shock MUCH better
3. Bamboo lasts longer (Fiber doh will lose shape over time?)
4. Bamboo can be repaired easily
5. Bamboo is traditional and fits/looks better
I guess it's kind of like the Tetron vs. Cotton Hakama choice!

Check out www.bogubag.com for bamboo do with irregularities. They are cheaper than $400.
