I'm just curious, has anyone made their own shinai bag (or had one made for them?). I did this summer. I was distressed at the price of nice looking shinai bags. I created a pretty sturdy one for myself for under 10 dollars.

I am currently writing a short tutorial that I will probably post here on how to make your own sometime, I was just wondering if anyone else had, and if you have, what materials and process did you go through in making it?

I am using a mostly completed homemade shinai bag right now. The material is a fairly light canvas-type material. It cost about $2 at Wal-Mart. The velcro that I have yet to add probably cost about $1-$2.

One tip on making your own shinai bag - plan everything in advance. There are more features that I would like to add to the bag, but it is difficult once sewn to add another pocket, or some lining on the base to protect it from wear. Plan well and add all the goodies before sewing up the sides.

Actually, I did plan for the bottom to have wear on mine. :P

However, by the time I was finished making it, I realized that there would have been a lot easier way to do everything then the way I did it. And I had to get a little creative with sticking on a tsuba pocket.

If your interested, I posted some pics in my blog (http://www.livejournal.com/users/athena2/39624.html#cutid1) of how my shinai bag turned out.

Oh well, even if your back eventually does break sooner than a purchased one, you probably got your 4 dollars wear out of it! :silly:

What was your solution for the tsuba pocket?

Looks great. I like the way you play with the color and the design of the

bag and the rope.

Nicely done ;) ;) ;) ;)

I didn't do the entire length long enough, so I had to sew on an extra pie to fold over, then another piece for the tsuba pocket. So the tsuba pocket is inside that flap of fabric that folds over (behind where the string ties around).
