Rice glue

Anyone had success making rice glue? I'm making own saya and recommendations are for rice glue only for the edges. Not that I doubt it :confused2 but I haven't got a clue!!!

Duh! Could have looked a little longer! I found this technique:

Sokui (Rice Glue)
If you are using a shinken (a real katana), it is a good idea to seek professional help before attempting any repairs. Even the glue used to fix minor problems with the saya or tsuka, can adversely affect the metal of a real sword. Therefore, care should always be taken when selecting materials. Many glues that are available on the market which are used for woodworking, contain chemicals which give off fumes which can damage the metal of real katana. Iaito are not quite as susceptible, but if you would rather not take the risk, a simple, traditional glue called sokui is easy to make.

How to Make Sokui

1. Take a small amount of one- to two-day old cooked short-grain rice and place it on a clean, flat surface. A board works well.
2. Wet a strong, flat stick, such as a bamboo spatula and mash the rice.
3. Add a drop or two of water, and mash again.
4. Keep adding water as needed.
5. Continue mashing the rice until it becomes a sticky, glutinous mass with no lumps.
6. You now have basic sokui.

How to Use Sokui
1. Use a small sliver of wood to spread a bead of sokui over the necessary area.
2. Press together the pieces to be glued. Hold them firmly in place using a cord, rubber band, or other similar device until dry.


Any other advise on do-it-yourself will be appreciated. I'm working from the ground up here (with no experience in the making department)

Haha... thats right, cornflakes for breakfast...(in my case, nothing for breakfast) thats why it isnt 3 meals... (and a good thing too) :)

No ... working at doing my own fittings. I did make a sword from the blade up though, but it's a broadsword! I've got 5 swords (hope that doesn't sound like boasting) - but a really cool ancient friend of mine is a blacksmith specialising in ancient weaponry and I've done a bit of work with him. Trouble is I can' ask his expertise anymore because he's dying :down: . I've got as much of his work on paper as he could get to me but it's mainly on the process of smithing and not the fittings side of things.

And Chidokan told us some interesting effect of the rice.

I know I eat a lot of rice, but I never know any body who was kill by it^_^

As a side note of semi-useless knowledge, rice glue is also what is used for holding the paper in shouji (障子）. Easy to make. Have to do so everytime my 1 year old son or cat (or me for that matter) pokes a hole in the shoji while (playing, running, swinging bokuto, falling, insert verb here) and the paper has to be replaced.

The reason it is used is that it does not discolor the paper when it dries...plus rice is generally onhand ;) They now sell special glues in squeeze bottles for shouji repair, but that wouldn't be as fun, now would it.

what if you don't use one-two day old rice, what if you make the rice and use it right away? Will it not be as strong?

It will be weaker. That's chemical: when you wait, the starch in the rice is reacting with water (hydrolisis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrolyzed)). The time you left it is important.
I won't try to explain it any longer, because a forum about JSA is not the place for a full chemistry lesson (which I'm not able to write, I didn't studied chemistry enough).

Does it make a difference which type of rice you use.

I once went to catering seminar run by an Indian chef and he noted that there are over 1000 types of rice.

So, I understand that it needs to be short grain but is it better if it is white? Is it better if it is older/past its sell by date? Are certain types better than others? Would there be a difference with 'organic' rice?

Oh and why short grain rather than long grain?
