The Otake Sensei seminar was fab, My arms are so bruised they look like bar codes, and my legs are not working properly today, so it must have been good training!
It was really interesting to get clarification on some points of the Tokyo style (which is what most/all of us in the BKA follow). I think a lot of us in our eagerness to gather any information available had for a while been practicing a bit of a mix. I now understand some of the differences much more clearly.
It was also nice to practice Koryu in sequence including those that appear in Seitei. I don’t do that very often, we tend to skip over the seitei ones because of time constraints. This time I got a really nice feeling of the overall progression of the Katas.

When I hear "Otake" I think Otake Risuke of Katori Shinto Ryu. Which Otake are you guys talking 'bout? :)
Andy_Watson

Otake Toshiyuki, 8th dan kyoshi and student of Yano Sensei.
Yes I thought the clarity of the seminar was excellent. It really stuck with me, even days after, the lesson about catching the sword in kuritsuke on Tachi Otoshi really at the last minute and not pre-empting. Fantastic stuff.

Er Andy, I think you literally got the wrong end of the stick there.
Left hand prepares early, right hand last minute.

Don't answer that...

Were you at the same seminar as me? I distinctly remember training with a Harry-shaped person now and again but I couldn't swear to it...
No, I distinctly remember Otake Sensei saying both hands move quickly right at the last moment. Didn't you get that?

I think you might have cut and pasted what you wanted to hear over the actual facts:confused: Maybe because you couldn't do what he was actually asking.:silly:

Well possibly but seeing as I speak Japanese and you don't I find the concept of you understanding and me misunderstanding something as being a bit incredible.
Perhaps his message to you was based on your technical level (i.e. you're not able to do all the movements at the last moment and need time to prepare) whereas my interpretation is that competence leads to speed and efficiency and there is no preparation necessary.
Also not sure I appreciate the use of emoticons to soften what was otherwise a bit of an offensive posting...
Now I am confused - how could a hand prepare early for the kuritsuke?
Starting in hidari gyakute with the jo blocked by the sword, if the uchi pulls back up through jodan and begins to cut I thought the response is to have both hands immediately travelling along the jo simultaneously while the body twists so the hands are in position before contact (assuming we are talking about zen ken ren tachiotoshi) so the left arm never approaches uchi but sort of travels back and up pulling the stick while sliding up it.
I have this mental image of the left hand going to the end of the jo early inviting uchi to cut it off - I must be misunderstanding something.

Yes I agree with your understanding of the movements, Harry has just misunderstood the timing of doing this. I remember being told that as an advanced exponent one should wait until the sword is nearly upon you and then execute all the movements in one continuous flurry. Harry seems to think that this technique would work if you get the left hand working a lot earlier.
She has probably been eavesdropping the ikkyu group instead of paying attention to what she was being told, as usual.

Perhaps it was more a case of you being so impresed with yourself you forgot to acctually look at what was being demonstrated?

Oh shut up!
I was working so hard I barely had the energy to think about what I was doing. I do remember a lot of people not paying attention to the explanations though despite a lot of hard effort to organise and run this seminar!

Fine, if thats your attitude you can find yourself another Jodo partner. I don't need to practice with someone who can't take critisism.

Well I'm sure there's no shortage of people who I can find to take on board what's explained instead of going off on their own tangent.

Better leave that to the pros...., you go work on your kuritsuke timing until you manage to do what you say should happen.
