Does anyone out there know if there is some kind of neck brace that you can wear to protect your neck from missed tsuki? I had a few shinai skid my throat and it is not a pleasent experience.

There was a thread about this a little while ago but I don't know where it is. I mentioned then that I remembered a fellow who rocked a hockey neck guard. I think this was more out of concern for the integrity of his wind pipe and glands than for superficial scratches, but it would help with both. Other than that, I'm not aware of any product specially made for that purpose.

Eguchi, http://www.eguchi.net/ in L.A., CA sells a supplemental protector for the neck to prevent "skid marks". There may be other suppliers as well.

At all times, KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN AND YOUR CHIN TUCKED IN. The main cause of injuries from missed tsuki is people lifting their heads as they cut, which is bad technique anyways. If you keep your head down, then the tsuki-dare will protect you from all but the side of the neck scrapes, aka "hickey-waza" ;). And yes, you do get used to them.

You could try a neck protector for ice hockey goalies. I cannot guarantee anything. www.greatskate.com

Hmm but if you keep your head down and your chin tucked in, your men would be exposed. And if you got hit with a men strike with your head down, it would hurt as the padding is not thick towards end portion. I would suggest to just keep your head level at all times and like what ben says, don't lift your head whenever you execute a strike.
yeah, eguchi sells a nice tsuki guard but it's not really a good investment in my view. Plus it's not really allowed to be worn in tournaments unless you have the shimpan's consent.
But if your dojo practices tsuki alot....then by all means buy the guard. Safety first.

Your men would be exposed anyway - there's very little you can do to guard the upper men from attack. To defend against tsuki-uchi, keep your neck straight but look slightly down at your opponent. In the event that they miss and it scrapes you... get used to it. Call it a battlescar (even though it heals) if it makes you feel better. ^__^
