Anyone here get "white coat" syndrome at the doctor's office? During a checkup, I always ask the nurse to take my blood pressure twice, once at the beginning and once at the end of the appointment - the second is always lower without fail. My dad suffers from this as well, and he's an intensive care doc.

Well, I think I've developed Bogu syndrome. When we practice suburi in warmup or I'm hitting men/do/kote on someone blocking with a shinai, I have a much different swing than when I practice on someone wearing a bogu. My shoulders tend to get tighter, I take a larger step, I swing from my right hand sometimes, and the hits don't come off as well.

Our first kyu exam is in a little over two weeks from now, and while I don't think that'll ruin me, I'd like to eliminate the problem as much as possible. It's not physical intimidation - I'm a pretty big guy and the same happens when I practice on people smaller than me. Does anyone have advice on this?

It's all in your head. You've already pinpointed the problem. You might as well quit.

just relax and dont worry about it.
Things will go wrong sometimes, if you accept it and carry on
to improve yourself things will become better and more natural.

Try doing suburi with just your left hand....then after a lil while just gently place your right hand on it and continue with your suburi. It should feel pretty much the same as when you started with just your left but now you have more control. If you use your right hand too much then you get the results you mentioned in your post....plus it hurts for people recieving!

So yeah, ease up on the right hand grip a little and relax. Nothing to worry about your ikkyu exam it's pretty much automatic.
